HOW WERE THE HARDYSTON, LAFAYETTE AND OGDENSBURG TT'S?

Hi,

I see that alot of people complain about he 10 dollar admissions. I run a Tricky Tray also and use that $ 10 dollars to pay for the hall and the coffee and cookies and cake or what ever else . We also give a sheet of tickets . Hope you all understand.

Just got home from the Noah's Ark Animal Shelter TT tonight. It was wonderful. Simply one of the BEST Tricky Trays in the area. 50/50 was over $2100 to the winner! Over 270 regular trays valued $50 - $100. Eight specials and about 5 super specials. The regular prize sheets were 7 for $20 (presale) or 6 for $20 at the door.

Calling was fast except she kept having to repeat the numbers because people weren't paying attention.

This was our fourth time at this TT and we'll be back. You guys know how to run a great Tricky Tray.

I went to Holy Cross School in Harrison. It was so UNORGANIZED!!! They stated calling at 7 didn't start until after 7:45. You could not hear the caller and her microphone kept going out. Then they took a 5 minute break which was really 20 minutes. The low level prizes were not even worth playing. We should have been out of there early it was way to late for the limited mount of prizes that were there.

The Green TT was fantastic too, it's really too bad that they compete on the same night.

I've been to the Noah's Ark, and Green is comparable, if not better, and certainly has more baskets. Green had 400+ regulars and at least 15 super prizes in 4 levels. AND, Green doesnt charge admission!
Anonymous said…
The Noah's Ark TT was great as usual. This year was no exception. The 50/50 was over $2,000. There were over 270 regular trays and about 15 specials and 2 super specials. The FIRST super special included a Garmin gps AND $250.00 gasoline gift cards AND a Sirius Radio gift card with subscription. The SECOND super was a choice of vacation to either Las Vegas, Cancun or 5day Carnival Cruise! That's what I call SUPER SPECIAL! Tickets for these were only 3/$10. or 7/$20. It's so nice NOT to have 75 specials PLUS 25 super specials which are not even special and too expensive to be in them as it is with some TT's. There was no admission fee. The $20.00 was for 6 or 7 sheets of tkts. Very reasonable.

It's nice to help homeless, defenseless animals for a change! WE will nominate this TT for Tricky Tray of the Year!

WE have absolutely NO complaints. Caller was fast and did not describe the trays. (we had programs). It started on time and ended at 1030p. No intermission either!

Thank you volunteers you did a great job again! WE will be back again next year. Sorry to say I didn't win anything!
Anonymous said…
Yeah, I'd say, if I HAD to find things that were wrong or bad about the Green TT it was this:
1. intermission
2. "door prizes" for tables - not everyone was sitting at tables
3. the caller did a little too much pausing between numbers (to wait for confirm on prior winner)
4. he would quickly describe before calling (we had programs, no need)
5. the mic system was not strong enough for a gymnasium full of chatty women
I must say though, that the number of great prizes and food options (including free coffee which was not half bad) really off-set any issues.
Anonymous said…
I agree Noah's ark was a good one. Although I didn't like the two different color tickets for regulars and the 50/50. The prizes were fantastic though and I won!

Anyone go to Oxford Central School's tricky tray? Just wondering what you thought. I thought it was so so.

Dear organizers.
The heading under TT Blog states this is a site to "Sound Off" about TT's, Good or Bad.
After reading the flyers stating the Lafayette tt is the best tt and a high class tt... WE decided to attend it on Friday night, hoping it had improved since last year. Well, it did not. Nor was it "high class". WE did voice our "opinion" last year stating there are too many specials. (about 75 or so). Which realistically is impossible to be in... considering what it would cost. That's in addition to the regular 275 baskets. We had never been to a tt with so many specials. WE are sorry that you did not take this in the spirit it was given....As constructive criticism. Instead nothing changed for the better. There were again too specials.

The calling did not start until 820p instead of 8p. The caller was fine until he decided to read off the names of the donors of the supers. (we had a program). In the beginning he said he would only call the numbers without description. Then at 1020p came an intermission of 10 minutes, which turned into 23 minutes. Attendees were upset and yelling "no intermission". The group did get rowdy. It finally ended at 1130pm, way too late. Doors opened at 6pm.

You seem to be confused as to the purpose of TT's. All Tricky Trays are fundraisers not just yours.
(see your blog of 4/12/08 841am).
You did not make it a fun night. More than tweeking is necessary.

You have a lot of nerve to tell someone on this blog to go somewhere else because they do not have the same opinion as you. We gave you constructive criticism LAST YEAR and said nothing to you THIS YEAR. Your personal attack on this blog was totally unnecessary.

WE go to many TT's and leave excellent reviews for those TT's that deserve it.

I have to agree w/all the comments made about the Green TT as well. The baskets were phenominal & ticket prices were good & no admission fee is even better. However, I have been to plenty of TT's that along w/not charging admission, do not charge for deserts as well. With not giving everyone the same fair chance to win door prizes, the door prize ticket should have been able to be used in the baskets. Hearing how wonderful the Noah's Ark TT was, it's going to be a hard choice if these two events are held on the same night next year. Had fun even though I didn't win.

Lafayette's Tricky Tray was nowhere near "The Best Tricky Tray". I thought their signs were pretty funny and that they were a little bit full of themselves! It was a horrible tricky tray and they should really change their attitude and signs for next year. The organizers should check out some of the "Best" Tricky Trays in Sussex County i.e. Mckeown School, Alpine School, and Stillwater. Those organizers seem to read our blogs and improved their tricky trays.
Anonymous said…
Wow, I never heard of anyone complaining about too many specials trays...I personally like a big selection.

Anyone go to Sandyston-Walpack? I couldn't make it...
Anonymous said…
I went to the Green TT about 4 years ago and thought it was OK. I did not like all the brown bags on the wall with small gift cards in them. Some only $5.00. It made the night way too long and boring. I haven't been back. That's about all I remember about it.
I went to the Noah's Ark TT last night and thought it was one of the best I have attended. The 50/50 sellers are real personable and walk around all night. Their hearts are really in it. You can tell they love helping the animals. All the volunteers are friendly. Great night. thank you.

Who are the people running the Lafayette TT? Are they teachers?

I went too and wasn't impressed.

Hope they don't tell me not to come back because I didn't think it was that good. I've already decided not to come back next year. Too expensive for my taste.
Anonymous said…
I was hoping to go to the Sandyston Tricky Tray and could not make it! Did I miss a good tricky tray?
Anonymous said…
I really doubt the Lafayette Teachers ran the Tricky Tray. I assume it was their PTA/PTO and by the looks of these comments in the blog they should get a new bunch to run next year's!
Anonymous said…
Don't know what all the hub bub is about Lafayette TT. I was there and had a good night. It did run later than I would have liked. Thought the prices were good and the selection of trays even better. I guess every TT can't please everyone.
Anonymous said…
Here's an idea for the special trays. Instead of selling 6 tickets for $10. Give people a sheet of tickets (different color than the regular sheets) for say $10. This way people get a little more for their money.

My daughter is a student in Lafayette. I went to support the TT because of this. I have to admit we left after the regulars. It was just top expensive to buy the special, super specials, mega specials and the 50/50. I did my part to support the school and luckily I won. I'm disappointed in Lafayette's response to the blog. I can't understand why you would tell anyone to not come back. That's just bad business. For all you know they could have had something to do with the donations you solicited. It may come back to bite the PTO in the you know what.

Do you bloggers think your word is gospel??? I am running an upcoming TT and cringe to think that after all of my hours of hard, volunteered work...one or two people that don't have a good time would try to ruin it for us. We do what we can to please the masses, of course you can't always make everyone happy. We want all to have a good time as well as raising the most money for our cause. Anyway, good luck to all who attend, we do try our best.
Anonymous said…
You need not cringe. Just read the blogs giving advice to organizers to make their events a success. We find that very few organizers read those helpful blogs. Noone wants to give bad reviews. I know I love to leave a good review because that shows that I had a good time and will say so. Most people who attend have no affiliation with your organization and will only support your tt to the degree of having a good time and a chance to win with a set amount of cash. Someone who is affiliated with the group will probably spend more. In either case just treat us with respect and not think of us as a cash cow. Good luck with your TT.

I went to the Green TT, and I was pretty impressed with how many trays and specials they had. Good prices, no admission. As far as the door prizes.. they had numbers for each table AS WELL as numbers for the bleacher sections.. so everyone could have won.. but I really didn't like that we did NOTHING with our door prize tickets.. we could at least have used them in the trays as a regular ticket! I also didn't like that the desserts were charged for.. I think that is tacky. Charge for food, and bottled waters and soda, but cake and cookies should be free. I just recently helped to run a local TT, and it is a huge amount of work, and no, you cannot please everyone, but listening to useful, helpful and CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is good for all involved! We want people to walk away from the event and think.. hey.. I want to go there next year.. let me tell all my friends about it.. not.. wow.. that sucked.. its the worst TT I have ever been to, I am not going back there! Gee whiz people.. you would think you were being personally attacked instead of just taking some advice! Now... where are the good TT's for next week everybody? Sounds like I am glad that I missed Lafayette! :)
Anonymous said…
Wow - some of you are getting really nasty. Let's keep things in perspective people. As a parent of a school that annually holds a tricky tray fund raiser I take offense to those of you who are so viciously attacking particular tricky trays. It's a way for an organization to make money. So what if they have too many specials or claim to be the best. If your that unhappy, stay the heck home!!
Anonymous said…
For the woman who said she's from Lafayette and was disappointed to the response to the blog - you should get the whole story before you comment. Shame on you for bad mouthing our PTO. Maybe your new to our school and didn't realize your daughter will benefit from the money that the tricky tray brings in. Perhaps you should attend a meeting and find out how hard those woman work and what the PTO provides for the school.
Anonymous said…
What is the "whole story"? We can only go by what we experienced the night of the Lafayette Tricky Tray.
Anonymous said…
I am putting on a TT this fall and am a bit confused when I read about "admission" - the TT's I have attended usually charge for 2 - 4 sheets of tickets at the door - is this considered "admission" - if not, please enlighten me.

If you didn't have people pay at the door, how would you keep count of how many went in - I think places have set numbers of people they can let in due to the fire marshal and local regulations.

Thank you.

Wow! I was hoping the new page would start with some good natured blogging. Well, here's my input. We went to a lovely TT at St. Claire's in Clifton Friday nite, and they really did a great job. They changed the caller from last year, and this caller was articulate and quick. Ticket sellers were very efficient, everyone was well behaved, and the prizes were really nice. Congrats to the organizers.
Anonymous said…
I don't know why ONE PERSON keeps complaining about Lafayette TT. There was no admission, as a matter of fact they were handing out free Modells discount coupons just for walking in the door. There were tons of signs that I saw that said "No Bent Tickets", something we all love to see. There were tons of FREE snacks and desserts, another thing we all love and blog about. Their ticket prices were fair and they allowed us to use the door prize coupon as a regular ticket. The 50/50 take home was something like $1500 at the end of the night. I have to agree it was a long night and intermission went a little over 10 minutes like they announced but not once did I hear anyone get rowdy or chant "no intermission" as the previous blogger posted. I did see plenty of people loading up on the free snacks at that time. To Lafayette, my group and I enjoyed ourselves at your event...by the looks of the crowd I'm sure it was a successful night. Two of us went home winners, two did not but had a great time anyway. Don't let one or two people who have nothing better to do but post untrue, nasty remarks about your event ruin it for you. To those who don't enjoy an event, simply don't return. As for my group, WE WILL SEE YOU NEXT YEAR LAFAYETTE!
Anonymous said…
I don't believe the woman claiming to be from Lafayette actually is. If she supported her PTO, she would have been able to be in on the specials. (Lafayette parents will know what I mean.)

I BLOG DO YOU???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just speak the truth!
Anonymous said…
Lafayette, are you saying you had pre-sale for your TT that no one knew about (only the parents)? I'm confused. Maybe you should explain why Lafayette parents should know what you mean...and why you think everyone who has a child in your school district should be able to afford it.....How do you know what they can afford?
Anonymous said…
Lafayette does not have any kind of presale. As an incentive to Lafayette families to donate trays, the PTO offers free tickets. Lafayette is a small school and a small PTO that works hard. Most people know each other and work well together to better our school.

To correct the previous blogger: Special ticket prices were $1 each or 6 for $5...

I BLOG DO YOU???????????!!!!!!!!!!

What does "I BLOG DO YOU!!!!!" mean? I'm sure glad you are responding to your constructive criticism in such a positive professional way.

I went to the Chittick School's tricy tray on Friday. It was by far the best one the East Brunswick Schools have had. The least crowded too. $7 to get in but we got a sheet of tickets, free ice cream, water, drinks, Starbucks coffee and a resturant gave ziti and chicken dish samples(ample size) free! The prices were fair and they had nice prizes!
They did start 1/2 hr. late. The callers took too long describing what was already in the booklet. Just call the numbers please. And did anyone else see the lady just hand two people door prizes? Their numbers definately weren't called.
Anonymous said…
Now Saturday I ran to the Special Olympics tricky tray in Reeders, PA. Great larger prizes and not a bad price for the tickets. They had a great system helping their Olympic runners. Great job guys! $5 to get in and a free sheet of tickets-no problem it was for a good cause.
Only bad thing was they too started 1/2 late and read all the prizes.
Anonymous said…
Tricky Trayers, it is a very unfortunate day when one does not know the meaning of a fund raiser. The Green Township PTA does not charge admission to this event and the desserts that you speak of were not small pieces of cake or cookies, they were full size portions of 7 layer double Chocolate cake, apple caramel pies, large portions of fresh fruit salad and a few more Our table had many of the desserts and all were fabulous, the women working in the kitchen thanked us for supporting the 8th grade graduating class. I do not go to a TT looking to save money, I would stay home if that was my goal. Charging for delicious food and desserts is really not tacky, but expecting free food while at a fund raiser is quite tacky. I happened to take a menu from the event and all drink were $1.00 Dessert were $2.00 and Chicken Caesar Salads , The best BBQ Pork Sandwich with baked beans that I ever had, Meatball Sandwiches, and other dinner items were $4.00. My table was very happy that we decided to go to the Green TT. I guess you just can’t please everyone.
P.S. At my table we went home empty handed but we spent time with friends, support good causes and as an added bonus we were quite full.

OK...Admission covers the initial cost of snacks, tickets and a nominal fee to use the hall/school, etc. A majority of TT's charge admission, it's no big deal..get over it. As for too many specials?????? Since when do we complain about too many prizes. I usually win at least one or two prizes every TT I attend because I focus on about six prizes I absolutely adore and get tickets for just those. For those who complain about too many prizes in any level, well you're being too greedy and expect to be in for all of them. Buy what you can afford and leave it at that, but don't condem an event for having too many specials or charging admission. And to organizers....charging admission to help front the cost of coffee, snacks, etc is OK....but then don't charge for those snacks. That's just poor business and really, really greedy.

This blog has gotten very nasty at times, but overall, it is suggestions and constructive criticism to help organizations run a successful and fun event. ORganizers, listen to these bloggers...they are the vast majority who fund your TT's and all they want is the most for the donated dollars.
Anonymous said…
Green, it sounds like you had some great food. I remember that from a few years ago (we went to Noah's Ark last night).

I wish Tricky Trays were spread out through the spring/summer. I would attend them all!

Anyone know anything about the Montaque TT this Friday? Ever been before? Not much info is posted...

In response to the comment on April 13, 2008 8:10 PM regarding the Lafayette PTO giving "free tickets" to families that donate....I'm not up on the legislation, but isn't that against the rules set by the NJ Gambling Commission? I know you are probably not intending to stack the odds in the parents' favor, but if I were a paying customer at your Tricky Tray, I'd be upset to know that families received "free tickets" for donating - which they should be doing because they want to help their own children's school.
Anonymous said…
I am not sure if it is against the rules, but I have heard of a lot of organizations that do that as an incentive. I organize our Tricky Tray and it is real hard (believe it or not) to get the families to donate a tray for their children's school. We have never offered "free tickets", but I can see why an organization would do that.
Anonymous said…
Regarding giving tickets to families as an incentive to donate to fundraisers (which is outrageous)...When my children were in school it was a requirement that each family donate or give cash equivalent (lets say $20) to a certain fundraiser. If a particular family did not have the means to donate they participated in the setup or cleanup or in some other way contributed. But since it is a fundraiser to benefit the children of the school, it shouldnt be a "donate if you feel like it" kind of thing. If parents arent interested in their children and children's education, they need to step it up and participate, if for no other reason, to set an example to their children. Maybe this kind of behavior by the parents is the reason for the same type of behavoir by the children. Parents are willing to go for a "fun night out" and spend money but they are not interested in contributing donations. I am no longer in the school system and I regularly donate, anything contained in a basket that I dont need automatically goes to another fundraiser to help them out.
Anonymous said…
I think the NJ Gambling Commission should take a closer look at how Tricky Tray's are being run. Giving free tickets to parents to donate trays sounds unfair. What's next? Will organizers start giving tickets to a business when soliciting prizes? I'm starting to question what goes on behind the scenes that Tricky Tray goers don't know.
Anonymous said…
Any word on upcoming Montaque TT?

This blog is starting to turn me off...I've never read such nasty, vendictive remarks in my life. You bloggers are giving us TT goers a bad name. I mean really, who is on the TT blog at 1:00 in the morning? Sounds to me like it is a person with a gripe.

If you are not into a particular TT just don't go back.

I also attended St. Clare's in Clifton on Friday night. They had a nice mix of prizes - there was something for everyone! Very good caller, too. I have been before and will go again.

Wow! So much hatred! Disgusting!

Eventually, event planners will become so sick of all of this negativity that TTs will become a thing of the past!

Come on people...there are so many other things going on in this world to be so passionate about.

LET IT GO!!!
Anonymous said…
Nasty, hatred, disgusting. Am I missing something? I don't see it. All I see is people voicing their opinions and questioning policies. Nothing wrong with that.
Anonymous said…
8:23 AM - Why are you judging what time I am on the blog? You don't know why I'm on at 1 AM and what my work schedule and free time schedule are like. I don't have a "gripe". I was just questioning the "free ticket" policy because I'd never heard of it and it seems unfair to me for ANYONE to get free tickets in a game of chance where all odds are supposed to be equal. Perhaps I'll ask the Commission, I could be wrong but I'd be interested to know. Don't be such a hothead and attack people who ask legitimate questions.
Anonymous said…
Me again...I called the Commision, and the guy said it's okay for the TT to give the tickets away for free for the merchandise prizes....but not for a 50/50. I still don't think it's fair, but it's legal! Glad I checked and just wanted to share my findings.
Anonymous said…
I don't think that's fair either. If I find out any upcoming Tricky Tray did that, I wouldn't attend.

Another weekend coming up with lots of tricky trays! What are your plans? I'll be in Hillsborough on Friday.

Purpose of trickytray.com per Mr. Tricky Tray is as follows:

Tricky Trays Blog quote...
A Blog To "Sound Off" About Tricky Trays & Tricky Tray Events & Fundraisers you have attended. Good or Bad...Just Keep It Clean.

What part of "good or bad" don't you understand? I haven't seen any UNCLEAN comments. I have only read about CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM.

for the blogger at 916am.....
If you want to talk about world events this is not the site for that.
Anonymous said…
I think giving away free tickets while others pay their hard earned money to support your fund is disgusting...and just wrong. I did not attend Lafayette TT but I assure you, after reading their nasty response to the criticism on this site, I will never attend. While you are right that you make plenty of money each year, that doesn't mean that you are doing things so perfect that it doesn't warrent change. Maybe the people that attend your TT don't know any better. The purpose of this website is to give the good and the bad and ways to improve. To tell someone not to come back because of their criticism is just tacky...go ahead and give away your free tickets and maybe those who receive them will be the only ones who show up. By the way, I think this site has voted a best TT of the year and it wasn't yours so stop adverstising that it was...just another lie on your part

Is anyone going to the Bridgewater Band TT on Thursday at the Bridgewater Manor? I had such a nice time last year and am looking forward to it. The ticket prices are super expensive but the prizes are nice and the evening is just a fun night out.
Anonymous said…
Wow. I am just amazed that the same person who hides behind "constructive criticism" is outraged that someone dares to think that the Tricky Tray they run is "the best". What's next, some sneaker manufacturer claiming their sneakers are better than someone else's? The horror.
I attended The Lafayette Tricky Tray, and thought it was great. I will be back next year.
Anonymous said…
Constructive not hateful is fine. Most schools and organizations look for feedback to improve. Why wouldn't you want to take the positive and negative and have an exceptional tricky tray the following year??
Anonymous said…
Exactly.

LOVED the Lafayette TT! Great trays...good food...fun people. Good night out with friends (and away from the kids!)Congrats to organizers. This is one we put on our calendars every year and will continue to do so.

Not sure what all the fuss is about, but when you are calling that many trays, it takes time. If that bothers you....go to a smaller scale one...I will be happy to return next year!

Anyone else go to the Hardyston one on that night? Interested in more info about that one.

I think one person answered my request for enlightenment about "admission" charges, but hard to tell because the last several emails have been taken up with lafayette's TT or something.

While I do believe that a lot of good information can be obtained from this website, sometimes it really is in the toilet.

I don't think there will ever be a perfect TT or fundraising event of any kind - there are too many critical people out there who are too willing to complain and put people down.

I think I'll just do what I've always done and do it my way - so far we've been successful.

As I say, a lot of good information can eb obtained from this site, but some of you ladies (I trust it is women mainly) really need to lighten up or stay home.
Anonymous said…
Do not charge admission to your Tricky Tray. If you have a good tricky tray you will recoup any fees for a hall etc. People hate the admission and there is no need to tick people off right in the door.

You asked..advice was given and still you say you are going to do it your way again. Why did you ask for advice if you're going to do it your way anyway. Sounds like you wanted to hear what you wanted to hear and maybe you didn't so down the toilet with good advice from veteran TT attendees. If you are so successful why did you even ask for advice ? Again advice falling on deaf ears as so many of us have said. NO, we are not critical of every TT, We give good and bad reviews. I prefer to give good reviews ...which means I had a good time....which I prefer over bad times. Please do not tell me to not go to a TT because you don't like the reviews.
Anonymous said…
I am a first time commenter, and I have to say, I agree with the comment about lighten up or stay home.
I am heavily involved with the Lafayette Tricky Tray and I couldn't take it anymore. I agree that we can use this sight for what it is, a forum for opinions, and a way for organizers to see what TT goers like and don't like. But for me to see comments like "you did not make it a fun night", "you should get a new bunch to run it" and "just another lie on your part", gets me a little upset to say the least. How is that constructive exactly?
We have taken many helpful hints from the comments here over the years. All our tickets are the same size, we call numbers quickly dumping the tickets out into another container WITHOUT looking at them, we provide free snacks and we don't charge admission. We all work extremely hard to make our event successful, as does anyone who puts on this kind of event. We welcome comments about how to make it better, but the personal attacks are hurtful and unneccessary. And frankly, they really clutter up the blog.
-A hardworking Lafayette Mom

I agree that the comments you listed above are not constructive. They are however, someones opinion and this is the place to share those opinions. Lafayette was given good and bad reviews. You should be happy about the good ones!

Hello Tricky Trayers!

It seems like our Tricky Tray is in the spotlight this year! First and most important, we would like to thank everyone who came out and supported us! It was one of our most successful events to date, the students and teachers of Lafayette will greatly benefit.

To set the record straight, of course we welcome all feedback, negative or positive and all constructive criticism. This is the only way that we know what we are doing right and what needs improvement for next year. Some pointers we have picked up from the blogs are: We pride ourselves in not charging admission, we always stick to the same ticket color for each level, we do not do “door prizes” but allow you to use the “door prize” ticket as a regular ticket, we provide snacks ,desserts, coffee and tea for free and charge a small fee for pizza and soda, we absolutely do not pull bent or double tickets and post signs throughout stating such, we have provided a dj for the past two years to make it more of a fun evening, we opt to have our event at the Wallkill High School so that our patrons are more comfortable in the auditorium seating, we believe our ticket prices are fair (Regulars $4 a sheet of 26 or 3 for $10, Specials $1 each or 6 for $5, Super Specials are $3 each or 4 for $10, Mega Specials are $5 each or 5 for $20) .

Admittedly there are things to improve upon. The night was longer than we would have liked. Next year we will not be reading the description of specials and supers, just calling the numbers to move the night along. Possibly starting the number calling at 7:30 instead of 8:00 was a suggestion we received.

It is obviously hard to please everyone, but we do strive to put out a high class tricky tray as we stated in flyers and signs. We do have a large following and mailing list of people who think that we are the best tricky tray around. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Some may think we have too many trays while others enjoy the large variety that we put out.

As far as giving the donating Lafayette families tickets, we do what we can to bring in the most donations in a timely fashion. These families do not receive their tickets until the actual night of our Tricky Tray (1 regular sheet, 1 special ticket and 1 super ticket if donated by January… 1 regular sheet and 1 special ticket if handed in by February, and 1 regular sheet for donations received by March). Most people are on hard financial times these days; including businesses who donate…we do what we can to bring in the biggest variety for our patrons. Thank you to the blogger who checked on the rules about this as we like to do things by the book.

Let me be clear that no one from the Lafayette PTO or Tricky Tray Committee have posted ANY of the negative messages flying around this blog. We can not be held responsible for what random bloggers post. Of course at the end of the night it is our goal to run a successful Tricky Tray and to make sure that most people walk away happy (winners and losers alike!). In the past we have offered a full refund before the number calling started to those who already purchased tickets, used their tickets and then did not think that we were up to par or were unhappy with our selection. We have never had any takers on this offer and hope that these people stayed the night and went home winners.

Sorry to be long winded, just wanted to clarify our position. To our loyal followers, we look forward to seeing you next year…to those who aren’t quite sure, we ask that you give us another try, and to those who just didn’t enjoy our Tricky Tray we wish you luck at whatever Tricky Tray you wind up at!!!

Thank you for the clarificaton. Although by the comments left reacting to the negative comments of your TT, I think you might consider that some of your PTO/PTA members did post (some pretty nasty comments) to the people on this board.

But enough said, hopefully we can move on to to discuss this weekend's TT now!

I beg to differ with your statement at 604p 4/12...you said...quote.. .. "Let me be clear that no one from the Lafayette PTO or Tricky Tray Committee have posted ANY of the negative messages flying around this blog".

Here is a quote from a blogger on 4/12 at 841pm...... "That Your entitled to your opinion is exactly what it is - your opinion. I'm sure it is a good idea that you and your mother should go somewhere else next year since you are unhappy with us. Thanks for trying our Tricky Tray again this year as your did last year." ..... This quote certainly sounds like someone who is affiliated with your group, the PTO or TT committee. .... No one else would have known such details as "you and your mother"

I am one of the organizers for the Green Township TT and would like to thank everyone who came out and supported our event. We appreciate all your criticism both good and bad and will take it into account next year when we plan our tricky tray.
For clarification, our hardworking 7th and 8th grade parents organize the food and desserts for our tricky tray. This is their largest fundraiser of the year. All the monies raised from the sale of food and desserts goes directly to our 7th and 8th grade classes to use towards their 8th grade graduation dance.

Unfortunately, schools sometimes run so many fundraisers, that families are asked way too often to donate this or that. Or, if you're like my school, that has over 300 families, you see the same 20 donating, working fundraisers, helping in the classroom and attending the PTA meetings. Yes, parents should happily donate prizes when asked because all the proceeds benefit their children, and they should do so without incentive of "free tickets". But we live in the real world, and they just don't. Not even with the free ticket incentive. It's very difficult to get parent participation in anything at a school. Many have asked why you don't make it a requirement, or mandatory, but with a public school, you can't. Private schools can, and it is often terms of their enrollment, but unfortunately, the masses at public schools don't have the luxury of "mandatory" donations. Don't stop going to those TT's who offer an incentive to their parent population to get some cooperation. Those are the ones you need to support the most, because they obviously are not getting it from their own peopel.

I also went to the Noah's Ark TT it was great. I agree the tickets should all be the same color it seems she called one color more than the other. It makes you wonder if the prsale sale tickets were the numbers called most often (Green). The com=ncept of the different color 50/50 was cute but as soon as the colored the color most left.
had a fun night met nice people and evening out,

I was also wondering about Montaque as it is a far drive for me. Anyone ever attend? More info from the chairpeople?

Re Admission charges: Fundraisers raise funds and they have expenses in the process. In the past at least in North NJ, organizations would have advance money to purchase some of the big prizes and to hold the event. Expenses included cost of various tickets, janitorial, decorations, advertising signs and complementary beverages usually with minimal free snacks for the guests. Additional food items for purchased would be organized by a subcommittee. Who decided these expenses deserved to be specifically covered by charging an admission fee. Committees simply cover all expenses out of gross proceeds. It's not like their portion of the 50/50 is specifically designated for a different purpose than money from regular ticket sales or money from a specific level of larger prizes.
A given attendee has only so much money you can wring out of them. They feel better about supporting the sponsoring organization if they have more tickets in their hand during the event.
Offer decent packages which include larger prize tickets and you'll find more people staying for the big prize draws. More people seem to be walking out now when the regular prizes are done because they haven't purchased any of the more expensive tickets.. This trend to charge admission fees is hitting people harder than you think. The bloggers here complain but still attend with some picking and choosing going on.

Did anyone else attend the St Michaels tt at Netcong School? Tickets were not mixed, not shaken but dumped in the bowl and then stared at for extended time while the drawer sifted through and finally selected one to read off. No signs about bent tickets and those who feel the need to boost their odds by cheating were doing well with early wins. We decided the lady drawing was looking so she would avoid picking more bent tickets.
It was an odd night with low attendance due to a flyer sent home with the kids telling the parents the event was a different night. Next years committee needs to post "BENT/MARKED Tickets will be DISQUALIFIED" and of course get the flyers right.

I AM SORRY PEOPLE ARE SO MEAN TO THESE HARD WORKING TT PARENTS. I USE TO RUN A TT AND I PUT MY FAMILY ASIDE FOR 4 MONTHS ORGANIZING DAY IN AND DAY OUT. YES YOU CAN'T MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY. WE USE TO SEE 250 TICKETS IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS CHARGING $7.00 ADMISSION. WE THEN WOULD USE THE MONIES TO PURCHASE TICKETS (THEY AREN'T CHEAP BUT YOU DIDN'T REALIZE THAT(YOU COMPLAINERS) ALSO WE USED THE REST ON BUYING PRIZES AND MORE PRIZES. EXAMPLE HAD A $50.00 RED LOBSTER GIFT CARD WE WOULD BUY LOBSTER BIBS, BOWLS, UTENCILS TO EAT LOBSTER ETC. WE HAD 350 BASKETS AND ABOUT 30 GIFT CERTIFICATES BY THEMSELVES. WE ALWAYS THEMED EVERYTHING AND WE MADE GOOD MONIES FOR OUR SCHOOL. I NEVER SOLD MORE THAN 250 WE COULD OF MADE ALOT MORE MONEY WITH 350 BUT ITS NOT ENJOYABLE WITH A LARGE CROWD, I MYSELF DON'T GO TO TT WITH OVER 300 PEOPLE JUST NOT FUN. SO TO YOU NEW SCHOOLS DOING TT. TRY AND STAY WITH ABOUT 250 PEOPLE AND CHARGE ADMISSION/GIVE A SMALL LEVEL SHEET OF TICKETS AND FREE COFFEE/CAKE. USE YOUR ADMISSION MONIES TO BUY PRIZES AND THEN I PROMISE YOU WILL HAVE THE SAME PEOPLE COMING BACK EVERY YEAR.

Forgive my ignorance, but how far in advance do all you "regulars" usually purchase your tickets to a specific event?
Anonymous said…
Unless its a dinner tricky tray, I pay at the door.
Anonymous said…
I don't buy tickets in advance. I see what looks good and I go. I guess if it's a dinner TT than I would buy a ticket ahead of time but I haven't attended one of those in ages nor do I care to anytime soon.
Anonymous said…
I'm just starting to get into Tricky Trays and I wasn't sure how that worked! Have you ever gone to one expecting to buy tickets at the door and then they were sold out? Are the events listed on this site pretty reliable in terms of letting you know once they're sold out?
Anonymous said…
I think they announce it on this site that they are sold out if they sell out in advance. But most TT's post signs at the actual door if they are sold out
Anonymous said…
fire regulations restrict the number of people allowed in the door. Some tt committees ignore this while others meticulously count everyone who walks in the door including helpers. If and when the posted occupancy limit is reached, the door is locked and a sign is put up. There is no way for an organization to post just when they hit max on the evening of the event. Some events never have this problem. Some friends prefer the dinners where the room limits are strictly followed.
those who ignore the limit are inviolation of fire safety regs and normally receive negative comments about how crowded, how uncomfortable the event was. the tt regulars could all list off certain locations they avoid because of a tendency to have packed conditions.
Those who post wanting to know if an event is worth the drive ... consider calling the school/sponsor and asking some pertinent questions. ask how many prizes, what are the prices, do they have advance tickets, what are the value of the prizes at various levels ... and how many attendees do they have. Many times I've learned about advance ticket sales, certain special prizes simply by calling and asking. If the number posted is the school, ask for a message to be passed to one of the tt committee. If there is no poc number, look it up. They will call you back and provide loads more info than the brief posting in the Events area. With the price of gas going up, I don't understand why you arent taking the initiative and phoning these events for yourself. One person can be extremely excited and say this coming event is the best, fantastic et cet. Say an event fails to mention they have Longaberger basket prizes which really divide the tt regulars. Many view them as empty baskets with no prizes while others will travel the length of the state in hopes of adding to their collection. Call - find out for yourself which event suits your desires.
Anonymous said…
That's great advice - thank you! Last question - what are the hot upcoming Tricky Trays?
Anonymous said…
Why do you care how much tt's bring in? Is it just curiosity? I just go to win!

Hi! I am from the Montague school and our TT is Friday night the 18th doors open at 6 calling starts at 7:30 on the dot. this is my 3rd year running this event. I think our prices are cheap.1 for $4.00,2 for 7.00,5for15.00,7 for 20.00 and 10 for 25.00. 50/50 &..specials are 1 for $1.00 or 8 for 10.00.
We have american girl doll, Wii, nintendo lite with extras, PS2,
Regis and kelly tickets, mets, nets, jets tickets and much more.
We are a small school and we try to just have a good time also there is no admission fee. student council will sell hotdogs and baked goods. We are kind of new to this and we learn a little more each year but the last two years have been a success with no complaining. I hope you will join us. Thank you

Events can operate very differently. Some events are strictly donation - the big prizes are whatever larger items get donated. Baked goods can be all potluck donations out of the parents club. Other events issue the committee money to purchase large prizes and cover the admin costs of holding the event. Committees can run up huge catering bills, decorating the tables, purchasing signs to place in neighboring towns, some purchase shirts for the committee members and really get to enjoy expensing items out of the proceeds.
So 400 attendees who spend an average of $50 each is $20,000. For some, that's close to clear profit. Other events may be in the red because it isn't enough to pay for all the purchased prizes, the purchased refreshments that didn't sell, and the elaborate decorations.
So if you ever do get an organization to tell you how much they made, make sure to ask if that was gross or after expenses.
Anonymous said…
Even after expenses sounds like the profit is substantial. There are more and more TT's each year not less. Free refreshments are in order.
Anonymous said…
You people are nuts over the free refreshments huh?
Anonymous said…
I would like to say something about the free refreshments. Some schools do not have many events where they can make some money so the TT is a great place to do it. I think charging for refreshments when the money goes to a group in the school is ok. I mean the TT is a fundraiser for the school.
Anonymous said…
When is a TT not a fundraiser? All TT's are for a good cause. Do you know of one that is not for a good cause? I don't care who the TT is for. I'll will support any TT that is a good value and has a good reputation. Yes, I do expect free coffee and sweets in return. After all that may be all I get since I don't always win. And that's fine with me.
Anonymous said…
We have made anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000. We have the old fashioned kind of tricky tray in our school with no fees other than the usual tickets, refreshments etc. We provide free refreshments and no admission and we are VERY happy with our profits to date!!!
Anonymous said…
Thank you for your response. I like your kind of old fashioned TT with complimentary refreshments and no admission. It certainly hasn't hurt your bottom line. Sounds like you appreciate those of us who support your cause. Thank you very much.

I wish those organizers who charge for everything would give our way a chance.

Oh let me be the first to complain about Sherman Elementary School tonight in Roselle Park. I know it was your first one and we could all tell. Your prize quality was bad I mean real bad. I know you all work hard to get prizes but it seemed to be really bad low level prizes or gyms, comedy clubs, and karate places. There were no baskets or very many items at all. Nothing was clearly marked and we had no idea what the value of any of the gift certificates were. There were lots of TGIF containers but you might have wanted to state that it was only dessert coupons. Also your ticket prices were way out of line with the prizes. You were a big let down and I hope that you go to a few tricky trays before you hold one next year. You can tell you guys were trying but it really was bad quality.
Anonymous said…
Tonight I went to the VoTech TT in Bridgewater. I won a lot of stuff, but the prizes on the first level were "old closet junk". You could tell that games had been opened or that bath products were a hundred years old. Also, the callers (except the last guy) kept looking at the tickets they were pulling AND the tickets for the first level were THREE different colors!!! Also, for the $10 admission there should have been some kind of free refreshments. Everything was for sale even the cookies. I did win a lot but they were not of quality and it was because there were not a great amount of people. Try to learn from your mistakes - The volunteers were nice. Overall, very disappointed.

Can you imagine there are more than 2 goddesses leaving constructive criticism. What is this world coming to.

Thank you for letting us know what you thought about the TT's you attended last night. Hope those organizers read this blog and learn from it.

I went to the Hopatcong TT last night. Very nice prizes. Over 250 regulars. All were nice and valued between $50-$75. Lots of gift certificates. They did a really good job. They had about 8 specials, 5 supers and 3 megas. The prices were $1, $2 and $5 a ticket. Not bad. Lottery apron and 50/50 over $1000.

Also there was no admission and yummy free refreshments. Cheese platters, mini sandwiches, fruit, brownies and FREE soda and bottled water. That was a surprise and really nice but I certainly don't mind paying for water or soda.

You guys did a really nice job. I didn't go home a winner but had a good time. The only thing is since you had such a nice program you didn't really need to announce what every tray was and who donated it. We could read that. I think we would have gotten out of there much sooner if you had done that.

That's it for this TT Goddess. :-)

It was commented above, that a few organizations have refreshments run by their youth group and the funds go directly to them versus the main organization. This situation softens up the usual complainers though most still want to see coffee/tea as complementary.

I've always looked on this blog as tt enthusiasts talking about our 'hobby'. Somewhere along the line we seem to now assume that all organizers can be addressed directly with complaints/questions posted here. There's room for everyone of course, but I'd like to get back to casually mentioning that the lines were long, the tickets multi-colored et cet without organizers with hurt feelings debating the issue or multiple attendees jumping in to bash an event by repeating the same complaints. I have friends who can't stand for extended times and don't mind supporting events with smaller prizes.
Anonymous said…
There is nothing wrong with small events or small prizes. I dont always want to go to an elaborate event. My friends and I enjoy the small events just as much as ones where we can win big expensive prizes. The problem does not lie with the size of the production or the size of the prize. The problem lies with used garbage from someones attic or drawer. And tremendous ticket prices to bid on such wares. We have been to many a tricky tray with lovely small prizes that arent used and had tons of fun. As far as people "jumping in to bash an event by repeating comments", thats what this blog is for, to add comments good or bad. I wish (as everyone else here does) that we could say great things and rave about all the events. Unfortunately, people running the events dont grasp the fact that if they want to get rid of their used merchandise they should hold a flea market somewhere so people who want that kind of stuff can pick through it and buy it if they like. They shouldn't try to foist it off on us after we are lured to an event under the guise of going to a tricky tray.

I am tired of reading rules for TT Chairs.

Here are some rules for the TT goers:

1. Please don’t haggle the volunteers or complain about ticket pricing to them. They are only VOLUNTEERS! If you don’t like the prices, kindly leave.
2. Please don’t try to tear into or rip apart the trays…they are wrapped for a reason.
3. Please don’t throw your tickets and/or garbage (leftovers from your FREE snacks) on the floor at the end of the evening. This is what garbage cans are for. You wouldn’t do that in your home now would you?
4. Please do not scream “SHAKE IT UP” to the number shakers. They are usually shaking so hard their arms are ready to fall off. It is not their fault that your number is not being called.
5. Please don’t bend your tickets or use both sides of your tickets and then say you didn’t know better and try to get some free ones.
6. Please pay attention to the number calling. It makes for a slow night when we have to read the numbers 3 times each.
7. Most important…follow all of these rules and we will all be guarenteed to HAVE A GOOD NIGHT!

Just got home from the Hamburg Fire Department TT. They were quick! They had really nice prizes. Gift certificates, Lia Sophia necklace, kids stuff, beach stuff. Prices were very good. Five regular sheets for $10. I won two nice trays. They charged one dollar to get in which included coffee, tea and baked goods. I'm really glad we went. Good job!

To the organizer who felt it necessary to post their rules on this site:

yes this board is for good or bad comments-

as long as the bad comments are not ranting and overly insulting-it's okat to say you din't have a good opinion about a TT becasue of x-but there is no need to go off on a tangent and completely belittle an organizer

a note about paying 'attention'

it's not always taht a person isn't paying attention that a number needs to be called a few times

I have auditory and visually processing difficulties as well as short term memory difficulty-

it takes me longer to process what the caller says and scan my tickets-
especially if i have multiple sets of tickets or numbers taht are not in order...
there are many other people that take time because of some time of difficulty such as cataracts--

it is true that some times people aren't apying attention-but don't rush to judgement...
Anonymous said…
I went to the Hamburg Fire Co. TT this evening and had a good time even though I didn't win! It was so well run by the volunteers. The caller was tremendous and quick. He should be recruited by other tt's, he was efficient. He announced no bent tickets would be called and he did throw some out and picked another number. The prizes were great and just the right number of specials and supers about 20 in all. About 200 regular trays. Prices were very fair. Free refreshments...they even had decaf coffee which not all TT's have available. Admission was $1.00...I can handle that.
This group knows how to conduct a TT.
Thank you for a nice evening.

LOTTERY APRON......
A volunteer wears a big apron covered with scratch off type lottery tickets. I'm guessing maybe 20 or 30 tickets. It looks great.
At Hopatcong it only cost $1.00 for a chance to win all the lottery tickets on that apron. It would certainly take the winner a long time to rub them all and hopefully a few would be winning tickets.

Mr. Tricky Tray had an enjoyable Saturday afternoon at the Miller Heights Elementary School in Bethlehem Township, PA. I was able to meet in person organizer Jody who has posted events in past and was very informative about the PA area when I moved to PA about 2 years ago. I also met organizers from other venues that are frequent event posters.

Miller Heights runs a very organized event with over 200 prizes. I especially liked the theme baskets, from the each teacher/class that were part of regular tricky tray. One had a gift card tree with a variety of well known merchants (20?) that totaled $100.00. Their tricky tray has a unique aspect "you don't have to be present to win" Something for other organizers to consider if you need to increase profits from same event.

It was nice to get away from work on a beautiful spring day and have something to contribute to blog!

Take Care Everyone,

Mr. Tricky Tray

I am a Tricky Tray organizer and when our organization had our first tricky tray we had many complaints and we were able to fix them! We love this site and know we could use help with our fundraiser. We took all the complaints and made our Tricky Tray a wonderful event and were so happy to read the good comments this year. We would not have had such a successful event this year without the complaints on this site. So I say to all you Tricky Tray organizers that are upset - do yourself and your organization a favor and listen and thank this site - correct your mistakes and your profits will increase!

I once won a super special with a bunch of GC for restaurants. I have little ones and never got to use all of them before they expired. Finding babysitters is a problem. Now I usually don't put in for restaurant GC unless I can bring the kids. It was a nice present though and worth a lot!

To the organizer who wrote on April 20th 11:22am:
I would like to know which tricky tray you are so I can make sure I am there next year. I want to support a group who, rather than grumble and get upset and offended, takes suggestions of their patrons and uses them to make for a better event the following year. Doesnt matter where you are, I will be the first to buy my ticket next year! Thank you!
Anonymous said…
I definately don't like when people don't have to be there to win. Then that's a lot more tickets in there which makes our chances of winning slim. Also what happens if the name isn't on it? Sometimes they've posted numbers. Always a chance no one claims that prize. I've seen it happen.

I was at a higher class TT ($25.00 sheet) and soemeone was bending tickets in front of me and i bought it nicely to her attention and she cussed me out.. well she sat by me and won nothing because they didn't pull bent tickets. Also a person on the grand put there ticket in like an accordian. The tt was run 110% and the prizes were awesome. a standing ovation to the woman who put it together.

i read in last weeks paper a priest was charged with holding a raffle at a church (buy like one of 300 tickets win big prize) for last 5 years the winners name was never recognized by the event people. father always drew the winning ticket. well he palmed the ticket and made believe he took it out of the barrel , called the name and said the person will pick up the prize. instead he picked up the prize year after year. he states it was for rebuilding chapel. that doesn't make it right. fundraisers are fun. any more... if you let cheating occur and pull bent tickets and let people know over cans, and let people take out tickets and put them in another prize shame on you. my girlfriend and I went to tt and we both won prizes we didn't put in for. looking at the program they were the can next to what we wanted. We actual caught someone doing it. TT organizers now must have people watch guard??? cheaters stay home.........

Bent tickets....When we brought it to the attention of the organizers or volunteers whoever they are they look at us as if we had two heads each. Sometimes they have no idea what we are talking about. Other times they act like what's the problem? As if we are tattling. I spend my good money and I want a fair chance. No organizers should run a tt if they never attended one.

If everyone is a volunteer and they don't want to hear about problems who should be told or should we just leave....as a previous post said!

the best prize I ever won was rental for 1 week at a beach house in Myrtle Beach. It was an awesome house!!

I haven't won anything lately that I want to keep. It's all going to our garage sale next month.

I usually try to win things for my kids...

I once won an American Girl Doll!

My latest is a game basket with snacks for a fun family night.

Must be a dry tt week.

No preaching or ranting!

We are the Hampton Township PTA Tricky Tray (that posted on 4/20/08 11am) and we had some complaints on this site last year! It was the first Tricky Tray for many of us organizers and we did need help. We tried to take all the complaints and use them to improve our event this year and it seemed to work! The weather wasn't cooperative that night, but everything else ran smoothly and we didn't hear of many complaints. We changed the entire set up of the trays and it helped with the crowd. The one complaint we had was that we weren't shaking right (it was me and my arms were killing me) - so we switched shakers and that seemed to help.

We look forward to seeing you next year at our Hampton Township PTA (Sussex County) Tricky Tray - it will be in the beginning of March on a Saturday!

Well, let me tell you I am disgusted with this TT listed on TT.com for Friday, April 25, 2008
Tricky Tray Sponsored By
Lincoln Park EMS
St. Joseph's Church
216 Comly Road
Lincoln Park, NJ 07035

When I arrived I saw everyone in line with a postcard in their hand. It turned out to be an admission ticket. It was SOLD OUT.... I was turned away. TT.com was not updated to reflect this. When questioned as to why TT.com was not updated. Noone had an answer....attitude was... too bad.
They had reached their capacity...they said no tickets were sold at the door!
With gas at $3.40 gallon it is totally irresponsible not to post SOLD OUT on TT.com as I have seen other TT's do.

WOW, it sounds like Lincoln Park EMS had presale and didn't let anyone on this site know. Organizers really need to post all information regarding their Tricky Tray or none at all. I would be mad too if I had made a special trip there!

Tonight I went to Upper Elementary School PTO in Parlin. I will start off with what I didn't like. The way the prizes were put out just didn't make any sense. When you got to the gift certificates you had to try to look at the ones on the wall to see what you were putting in. None of the items were near there cups or bags. It was very confusing. The lines to buy tickets were so crazy and if they were shorter I would have spent much more money. Some of the people running it seemed to have some big attitudes. I know by the time your event starts you are tired and overworked but never ever take it out on the people you want to spend the money at your event. There really was no need for being nasty. On the other side the guy calling did a great job. He kept it moving and no breaks. The prizes themselves were great. I actually can't remember the last time I went to a event where almost every prize was a good one. Ticket prices were also great. You can tell hard work went into the event.

The Lincoln Park EMS tt gets a thumbs down.

We also went to the Lincoln Park EMS tricky tray last night because we saw it posted on tricky tray.com. After waiting in line to get in someone announced no tickets will be sold at the door, only advanced ticket sale holders would be seated. We were disgusted after having driven there from 30 miles away. The volunteers had nothing to say, they knew nothing about it. They were clueless as to how to run a tricky tray. Nothing was posted that no tickets would be sold at the door. Lousy attitude.

I also went to the Elementary school in Parlin and agreed with the above poster. The prizes were real nice and the ticket prices were perfect but I do have some suggestions for next year. Opening the doors earlier would be beneficial, because of the long lines for tickets i had to rush putting them in and then didn't have time to buy more. As far as tickets go, I always like the sheets of tickets as opposed to the individual tickets. I bought $20 worth of medium tickets which was 100 tickets..great value but i had 100 numbers to listen for, I would have bought more but i felt in over my head with so many numbers. The amount of free desserts was awesome and the amount of prizes was incredible. Just fix the ticket issues for next year and you will have a real winner! See you nextyear

Oh and one more thing for the SUES in Parlin..maybe spread out the gift certificates instead of having them all in spot which caused such a big line..maybe 5 in one spot then a little further down another 5..just an idea.
Anonymous said…
Attention all TT organizers I agree with the above posting.....

That it is a good idea to have sheets of
tickets for all level of prizes. You're right it is hard to check all the numbers if you buy a lot of these individual tickets.....or maybe that's why I don't buy a lot of individual tickets.

Tonight I went to Memorial School PTA in Matawan. I must say for there first tricky tray they did GREAT!!! Lets start off with every person working the tricky tray was soooooo nice and friendly. They went above and beyond even the custodians were kind. They let us in early and started selling tickets because it was cold outside and they didn't want us to have to stand out there. I have been to lots of tt's and no one really cares about us standing outside. Ticket prices and prize quality were good. You can tell they worked really hard on getting this set up. I hope you guys do another one next year I will be first in line!!!

Called Temple Hatikvah and was told they are postponing tt. Like last year, they are graciously taking messages and promising the person in charge of event will call back with info. Just a headsup that last years postponed event never happened.

Yes the Parlin tricky tray had nice prizes. But they had long lines for the ticket sales. And even blocking the bags to put the prizes in. If they put several ladies in the center selling all the tickets we would have bought more too. And the one lady was nasty to several of us. We weren't fresh to her. Just made a suggestion.

Does anyone have any inside scoop on the Mendham tricky tray this week? I went several years ago and thought it was great, but then went last year and was disappointed. The prizes weren't as good and there didn't seem to be as many of them. I hope this year's is more like the ones a few years ago!

I have also made suggestions at tricky trays and also got an attitude from the volunteer or organizer.
Some just think they are high and mighty and know more than tt addicts.
Bet they have never even been to one.....well maybe one.

On Sunday I went to Cardinal in South Amboy. I think my only complaint would be your ticket prices were a little out of line for the prizes. There really is no need to have that many levels or different strips of tickets. Other then that everything went pretty well.
Anonymous said…
Any comments about bent tickets and various aspects of constructive criticism should be passed to the chair or cochair. Ask any volunteer who is going to draw the tickets or announce. A random volunteer who did nothing but donate the required tray and showed up to 'work' the night of the event doesn't have a clue.

If you are planning to attend an event, why not call and ask who you can purchase tickets from. Amazing how much money you can save by finding the presales that never get publicized.

I did go to the Hardyston Tricky Tray. It was the best one I have seen in years. They had over 220 regular baskets and they were all really nice, top of the line baskets. Their specials and super specials were really nice too. Different items. Alot of their baskets were things I have not seen before. I won a bunch of times. They had a goody bag for everyone who was sitting in the room with all of the tables. It ran smooth.
I am definitely going back next year.

Can you give examples of things you have not seen before. We are always looking for new ideas. thanks

Another big weekend coming up - and it starts on Thursday night for me at West Morris Mendham High School for their Project Graduation Tricky Tray!

They had gift cert's at the Hardyston Tricky Tray that I have not seen before. Just different places and different items, they had one where if you win, you could order a cheesecake online and have it delivered to your house. Not the same old things that you see at alot of Tricky Tray's when you are in the same area. I really enjoyed it.

Did anyone attend the Cancer Institute of New Jersey fundraising event last year.
I was just wondering how big the TT portion of the event was.

I attended the Beemerville Presbyterian Church TT last night.

It was very well run. They announced TWICE that no bent tickets would be called...that they would be thrown out if pulled. Let me tell you her voice told she meant it! The caller was great and very quick. There was no push to sell 50/50 tickets, noone walked around as is usual.
The prizes were very nice and first level tickets were 4 sheets for $10.00! No gouging at this event. I even won a basket for a change! Glad I went.

To the Mendham Project Graduation tricky tray volunteers:
As usual, lovely, high quality prizes - and fantastic snacks! Just of a couple of suggestions to make it even better: get a new microphone with some of the proceeds (I have been attending for 5 or more years and it seems there is always an issue with the sound!); don't describe every item in detail (the beginning callers were very quick, but near the end, the last caller made too many comments); and make the prices of the upper level tickets a little more affordable (or at least give us a break if we buy more). I think this year's event was an improvement over last year's, but, in terms of number of prizes, it still isn't back to where it was 4 or 5 years ago. Keep up the good work!

I also went to the Beemerville Presbyterian Church TT.
There were about 200 regular baskets , they were priced very fair. The specials were a bit high. Only 2 and 3 tickets for $5.00 and the super duper 1 for $5.00. I don't have a problem with the $5.00 but I would like to get more than 1,2,or 3 tickets.

The caller was very efficient and they took "no bent tickets" very seriously. All the volunteers were friendly and efficient.
The free refreshments were good along with coffee, tea and iced tea.
Thank you

Kudos to Beemerville for showing some attitude re bent tickets. The regular sheets were priced less than normal which may of made the higher level prices seem higher than we would of liked. They might want to think about giving a few more tickets out for $5 for bigger prizes.

I went to SuperKids Child Care
& Learning Center in Maplewood. I didn't see very many tt regulars and I can tell why. Overpriced, no organization, and low quality of prizes. 20.00 to get in and you didn't even get a full sheet with it. You did get a can of coke. I could have brought my own no need to charge 20.00. They started calling 45 minutes and late and no one had any clue what was going on. No tickets were mixed or put into a bowl. Right out of the cup the numbers were picks. The people who won put there tickets in last. Almost all the same 4 winners. The quality of prizes were just bad. It was one of the worst I have been to. I know it's there first one but before you have a tricky tray maybe you should go to a few see how they are run and what kind of prizes they have.

Went to St. Mary's in Hackettstown last night. I think this is the last year for me unless there's a caller change. It's supposed to be a fun night out - not a chore for us. It's not a comedy show - when people begin to boo and yell to move it along, please take note of that. We don't get the jokes and the funny noises. Three minutes between numbers called is way too long. Your other volunteers were great as always and the prices were fantastic. I just left with a huge headache.

Went to the SCFA Animal Shelter TT at Pope John HS last night. I think this is the last year I attend this one.
It was not a fun night, it was horrible to put up with a caller who screamed into the microphone all night...from 8p to 1125p ! She thought she was a comedian, bouncing around on the stage. She was embarrassing. She did not get it when she was told to quiet down. Finally had to stuff my ears with paper! She made the night unbearable.
The 310 first level prizes were boring. The gift certificates should have been bundled with the baskets. There were way too many mediocre baskets.
The only good thing I can say about this TT is that it was for the animals.

I also attended the SCFA TT at Pope John last night. I walked out of there with the biggest headache. The caller was so loud, she was unbearable. Dancing on the stage and SCREAMING "confirmed" and "you go girl!" every time the ticket had been checked. She is the reason never to attend this TT again. That and the prizes were not very good. Only a few were really good and therefore loaded with tickets because the others were so bad. I have to say the specials were very nice.

They had very little refreshments and they charged for them. At least coffee and tea were free.

This TT was MUCH better last year. I really hope they get their act together for the next one.

And the complaints begin...

Kudos to Casey at the Lenape TT. It was their first one and he was the fantastic. They had a Dj which made it different. It was run well for the first time out. If they continue to have, as the years go one the prizes would be more plentiful and the goup will get larger.

It was a nice size with mainly family memebrs of the faulty and students. One suggestion I do have is that in the flyer it said there would be food and refreshments. There was no food to purchase and only cookies and brownies. some of us came staight from work thinking we could purchae a bite to eat. Cookies and brownies are not a good dinner.

ALl and all it was a great night

Kudos to casey and his crew. See you next year.

Went to Lenape Valley Midget TT last night at the HS. I thought it was AWESOME. They had a DJ, which was a nice change. Fun Music was piped out to where the trays were. This prices were good and each level of trays were great. Everything ran very smoothly and the DJ called off the numbers quickly. Runners were fast.
They did have free cookies & brownies, coffee, water and Monster Drink was also FREE. Maybe next year they will do more FOOD items to purchase. Everyone went home a winner with FREE Bags of coffee from a donation.
I had a great time as well as the people at my table. We were all winners.
We will be looking forward to next years TT and the GREAT trays!

I wish I had gone to the Lenape Valley TT instead of SCFA Animal Shelter after reading the good comments about Lenape Valley.
I couldn't wait to get out the SCFA tt, it was torture to endure that caller's screaming all night for more than 3 hours. She thought she was the greatest! Some of the attendees stood out in the lobby to get away from her noise. She was so loud that it hurt our ears.
I hope for the animals' sake they have a different caller next year. I know my group won't come back if they don't get a new caller.
The prizes were nothing great either. Refreshments were very few. All the other volunteers were great! I wish for the sake of the homeless animals I could say that I enjoyed it but that just isn't true. It was much better last year which is why we came back this year. Live and learn.

Hi TT'rs. I have been running the TT for the NJBCA for the past two years. I have learned a LOT from this site and the blogs, and have come away with some really great suggestions. If you attended ours last year (in May) and have positive or negative comments- we want to hear them!
There are only about 5 sighted people that work on this TT, so we do work hard, and we want people to have a great time.
We are holding our 3rd TT on May 30, and would love to see some of you!

So tonight I went to St. Ann School in Raritan. Great prizes although I didn't win any of the big ones. :( My one complaint and biggest complaint would be all the kids that were there. I really don't mind when kids are allowed as long as there parents are watching them. I came home with a headache from the kids screaming in front of me and the one kid who decided to kick my chair all night. I DON'T GO TO TRICKY TRAYS TO WATCH OTHER PEOPLE'S KIDS! If you bring your kids watch them and teach them how to act in public. Although I can tell some apples don't fall from the trees. There must have been at least 100 kids if not more there. Also a note to St. Ann School you will bring in more money if you fill those seats with adults who are willing to spend money. Next time sell out to the people with the money and not the kids who run around the room and no one says a word to them! Other then that this was a great tricky tray!

The 3rd Annual RYAN DOLTZ MEMORIAL Tricky Tray was AWESOME as usual!!! This committee is a well-oiled machine! So organized, quick calling, great prizes, (over 500 baskets in total, including the specials) and 50/50 was over $1,500 to the winner. A very enjoyable night with a fun "family" of people who work for this organization! KUDOS to the Doltz Team! You ROCK!!!

I went to a tricky tray ONCE where kids were welcome, after that I vowed I would never again go to one with kids. Kids don't belong and most of them do not want to be at a tricky tray, they just want to have fun and play and be rowdy. The parents ignore them, so they just annoy all of us who want to spend our money. I will never again attend one with kids.
Organizers are you listening?
