I attended the S.T.A.R.T. II Tricky Tray on Thurs. night. Prizes were nice, very unorganized in selling tickets for prizes. No one in the prize room selling tickets either. You had to go back on the line out front to purchase additional tickets. The Food at the Cotillion seems to be slipping a bit too. They didn't offer seconds of anything as in the past. The same caller pulled tickets all night. Took too long to read each item and call the number more than 3 times...Can't win if tickets don't get shaken and mixed up enough before pulling. Sometimes a new caller changes peoples luck too! Not everyone picks tickets the same way..... The doors opened at 6:15 didn't start calling til 8 pm (Much too long) By 11 p.m. they still had not gotten to the Grand Prizes yet and on a workweek night!!!! Don't know what time they finished, I left after the blue tickets.... Still had Super Grand and Grand and 50-50 yet to call. I realize that this was only they're second event but, they need more practice in running an affair. Sorry, but Never again!

We went to Ridgefield Park last night. He was VERY anxious and excited to be the caller. He was planning how he was going to do it and going over it with the runners. Then they gave him a microphone........we thought our heads were going to blow off! He was screming into the mike. The runners were school children who were anything but well behaved. The prizes were nice, but alot of Christmas Tree Store stuff. Ticket prices were high for a basket from Christmas Tree Store. Didnt like this triky tray very much. Was anyone else there who cares to comment?

Was it just me or was anyone else disappointed in the Ogdensburg School tricky tray. I have gone the past 2 years and thought it was great, but last nights was disappointing. I didn't think the prizes were as good as usual and I think they should have lowered the ticket prizes accordingly. Also, the woman walking around selling the 50/50's was extremely annoying, She was yelling the whole night and I went home with a headache because of it.
Also, a note to anyone who is having a tricky tray during the cold weather months - if you have a hallway where people can stand on line instead of waiting outside in 30 degree weather, let them wait inside. I don't think there is any harm in that and I don't think it would cause any disruption. I think it would make a lot of people happy not to have to wait out in the cold.

WENT TO TRICKY TRAY AT ST BARTHS IN EAST BRUNSWICK. IT WILL BE MY LAST. I USUALLY ATTEND WITH A BIG GROUP BUT MOST OF THEM HAVE STOPPED GOING. BIG DEAL THEY SELL OUT 400 OR MORE TICKETS A YEAR. THEY HAD ONLY ABOUT 160 PRIZES FOR THAT MANY PEOPLE. YOU COULDN'T MOVE FROM YOUR CHAIR IT WAS SO CROWDED. EVERYTHING WAS $10. 25 TICKETS $10. CHEAP PRIZES. 15 TICKETS $10.00 THEY HAD A NECKLACE ON THERE THAT I SAW IN THE JEWELERY STORE THAT DONATED IT FOR $15.00 ?? ALSO THEY GAVE THE TICKETS OUT AND SAID YOU CANNOT PUT THE DOOR PRIZE TICKET IN ANY BUCKET. JUST THROW IT OUT.. NICE PRIZES ON THE BIG TABLE BUT SO MANY TICKETS IN THE BUCKETS ?? THEY WOULD DO SO MUCH BETTER IF THEY HAD MORE PRIZES?? THEIR M/C NEVER SHUT UP DESCRIBED EVERY GIFT AND REMARKED ON EVERY GIFT??

I'd like to hear comments about the tricky tray at the New Jersey Museum of Agriculture on Saturday, November 18. To those of you who have gone in the past, is it worth the 1 hour drive I would have to make?
Anonymous said…
Just wanted to comment on the "Music and More" TT held at the Hanover Manor on Oct. 12th (info. requested on a previous blog that's now closed). Good prizes but way too crowded. We got there when it opened and it was immediately crowded. The lines moved extremely slowly and it was hard to go back onto a line if you had extra tickets to use. Also, in the dining area, there were many more tables than usual and once people starting winning prizes, the waiters had to step over the baskets to get between tables. There should be a limit on the amount of tickets sold.

Went to the TT at St. Cecelia in Iselin, NJ on Friday Nov 3. First just two negative comments, took a long time to get in. Which resulted in the drawing of the numbers being delayed. Second, some tables where setup too close to each other and made it difficult to get the prizes to the winners. However, the prizes were nice, and many levels. The staff and runners did a good job. I took home 5 prizes. I'm a new Tricky Tray fan and would attend this event next year...

Hey need some help wanted to know if there was any Tricky Trays that anyone knew of for this Friday that would let me bring my 15 year old niece who is visiting from out of state. If someone knows of one can you let me know....

Thanks bunches!

I should have attached my email address... If you do know of a Tricky Tray for this Friday I can bring her to email me directly.

Thanks again.

After anxiously awaiting the tricky tray at Mount Olive HS on Saturday, November 4th, I was really disappointed. Everyone was complaining about the seats, the benches were so uncomfortable and not condusive to adults. Instead of a printed item list, the caller was describing everything. She kept saying how everything was "lovely". I know that sounds petty, but listen to it for 3 hours and it was annoying. The specials weren't that great, at all and the tables were much too close together. The tables had the benches attached and it was so hard to get through with people cramming and bumping in to each other. The only reason that I would go again is because it supports a good cause, Project Graduation, otherwise, I would forget it.

Regarding the tricky tray at Our Lady of Mount Virgin...It is SOLD OUT!!! And they are up to 191 baskets and climbing...Look for this one next year and buy your tickets early!!

Does anyone know when the Jefferson schools (Morris County) will be having their tricky trays ? i think last year they were in November, but I haven't seen aything yet.
Anonymous said…
Does anyone know if St. Brendan's is having their TT?
Anonymous said…
You guys all vent about some really crazy things on here, and that you would never attend again and all that, like you are punishing the VOLUNTEERS who are doing their best to raise money for people or organizations that really need it! You are entitled to your opinion and have every right to voice it, but in most cases the only people you are punishing are the recipients who receive the donation, not the people running it. Many people do this as a fundraiser for local charities, schools, education where the benefit of the money goes to someone other than the people running it. Something to think about before you post about how a seat was not right for you, or the caller was loud, or a basket didn't suit your liking.

I think MOST of the comments are meant to be suggestions to make for a better event in the future. Those running tricky trays have put questions out to us and we have offered suggestions. That's what this blog is all about.
We want well run events, reasonable prices, and quality prizes. When our expectations are met, we spend more money and your organization benefits!

I went to the Woodrow Wilson tricky tray last night that was voted best tricky tray of 2005. I did not go last year but was very disappointed this year. I went thinking it would be a real good one, but it was horrible. The prizes were useless things that people probably had in their attics and the prizes in the grand prize category were those found at other tricky trays in the small or medium category. I would like to know how they went from being voted the best tricky tray to about one of the worst I have been to.
Anonymous said…
I had a similar experience last year - I decided to go to the tricky tray voted the best of 2004 (which I had not attended) and was very disappointed with the 2005 event. I must have very different opinions from those who voted!
Anonymous said…
Looks like Best Tricky Tray of 2006 is up for grabs!
Anonymous said…
Can't say that I've been to any yet this year that were fabulous. There have been some good ones, but none stand out in my mind as great!
Anonymous said…
I also went to the Woodrow Wilson Tricky Tray for the first time based on the "Best Tricky Tray of 2005" vote. While it was held in a nice place, great food, very clear callers, the baskets were beyond mediocre. Four of us went to take notes for our Tricky Tray in March and were all totally disappointed. I did not know about TrickyTray.com when the voting was done but I would love to know the criteria for best Tricky Tray. I will say I spent less money than I expected because there was really nothing that I wanted at any level. I think there are two types of Tricky Tray customers, one group that wants low admission, will bring their own food and low prices. They are looking for a fun low-cost experience. Others want to go out for the evening have a nice dinner and possibly win an upscale item and are willing to pay more for it. Possibly the Tricky Tray should be classified by the number and value of prizes so people are not disappointed.
Anonymous said…
I tried to get tickets for the Woodrow Wilson TT and they said they were sold out when I called. (They never requested TT.com to post the sold out. ((I'm guessing)) ) I'm really glad now I didn't go. Thanks for all the feedback.
Anonymous said…
I totally agree with the posting a few above from anonymous that it would be so helpful if those organizing tricky trays would provide us with the number of baskets and the approximate value of those baskets along with the ticket prices. For example: Level 1 - 150 baskets, $25-60 value, $5 a sheet. Level 2 - 50 baskets, $60-125 value, 6 tickets for $5. etc...
Anonymous said…
i agree also. i would be happy if they would just provide the ticket prices, that would be a great start.
Anonymous said…
Does anyone know the guidelines for listing/having lottery tickets, money trees and the like as prizes? are there any restrictions? I thought I heard other than a 50-50, you could not give money away???
Any info is appreciated

I have to comment to the person above who stated that the volunteers are being punished and that one should think before writing comments. I do feel that it is important if a tricky tray has the right seating and enough space and a good caller. Though they are charitable events, we are also spending money and quite honestly there are thousands of charitable things that I could be spending money on. I like to go and have a nice night out as well. When a caller is loud or when the seats are not right or when the prizes are not worth anything, it shows to me that it was not well thought out and if it was a first time event then in that case suggestions would help for a better second time. I am sorry but if I was asked to sit for 3 hours in an uncomfortable chair with a person screaming into a microphone, I would rather just make a set donation, if I believed the cause was a good one, rather than sit through it, but I wouldn't be spending as much as I would if it was a great event. If you are going to do something do it right! Take constructive critism, it is part of life and it helps. You want people there to spend as much money as possible. If you do 1/2 of a job, you are not going to make the big money. Take Camp Auxillum (sp?) in Newton for instance. They have over 300 trays, huge specials and over $3,000 50/50, the caller is quick, there is enough room, it is fantastic. I am sure that it didn't happen over night, but look at the money that she makes for the camp. They work at it, and they get big results. Take time and interest in what your doing. Even if you are a volunteer, take the time to make it nice, you will be the one who is rewarded in the end.

I just went to my first Tricky Tray (Our Lady of Mt Virgin) with a friend who has gotten me hooked on them! (I ‘m deciding on my next one now.) The OLMV event had lots of baskets (200, I think). The caller was quick. The basket descriptions were pre-printed, the 5/50 was almost $2,000!
Anonymous said…
I went to the OLMV Basket Raffle last night too and would like to add that while the caller was very clear, they also posted the numbers on a projector screen on the stage next to the caller - very helpful as people could read their numbers almost as soon as they were called. It helped the raffle move along very quickly. I'd never seen that before but it worked great.
Anonymous said…
I also attended the OLMV Basket Raffle on 11/10 and will definitely go back next year. 1st prize level had prizes up to $150 for only $8 a sheet. The baskets were amazing. You didn't have to leave the prize room to go buy more tickets... they had people walking around selling them, which was a great idea. The night went quickly and the caller was great! I only one (1) prize but it was worth $600. I saw that they did sell out ahead of time (it was a good sized crowd) so I'm getting my ticket early again next year.

The Tricky Tray at Corpus Christi School was excellent! Well job ladies, you did it again. SO many, many prizes.
Anonymous said…
I went to the OLMV tricky tray on Friday and had a great time. I think for their first time, they were very organized and ready to go. The baskets were great and the caller was fantastic. My only complaint was that the line to put tickets in the first level prizes was too long, maybe they could get rid of the formed line for next year. But great job ladies..I'll see you next year!
Anonymous said…
The Tricky Tray at Corpus Christi School was ok this year. The caller was very hard to understand if you were in the back of the room. This event has gotten so big they really need to find a bigger place to hold the event. One comment on one of our prizes we won. It was a cat basket and the cat pillow inside was used and had stains on it. Not a big deal we just trashed it and kept the other items in the basket. Other then that as always many nice prizes. You can tell a lot of hard work goes into this TT.

Our Lady of Mount Virgin's Basket Auction on 11/10 was INCREDIBLE! The prizes were AWESOME, it went quick, they had people walking around selling tickets- they had a huge 50/50 - and great grand prizes! Definitely one of the best I've ever been to!! Everyone needs to experience their basket auction! I'll definitely go again next year!

Went to the Tricky Tray in Garfield
Which was suppose to be rated #1, two years in a row. I have to say
they've gone way down now. Food was good, workers we great, but the prizes weren't.
Sorry!!!!!
Anonymous said…
I have to disagree with you on the Garfield Tricky Tray on the 8th. Food was great, got out at a reasonable hour and the 50/50 was $1400.00 to the winner. Not to mention, I won one of the grand prizes of the backyard glider and the $100.00 gift certificate for Home Depot! The swing alone must be worth at least $200.
I had a great time!

The Corpus Christi tricky tray in So. River deserves the #1 spot this year. Prizes were awesome, price of tickets reasonable, and not too crowed. Also for the amount of people attending there was amost 1 prize per person. Great job and the prizes were wrapped great.
Anonymous said…
I just attended the Sokol USA Gymnastics TT and I have to say it was fabulous. The prizes were top rate, the food was great and the prices reasonable for tickets. This was the most organized and efficient TT I've ever been to, and I go to a lot. They had about 300 prizes total and not just your average baskets. Theater tickets, baseball games, and a Grandfather Clock as one of the Grand Prizes. Also TWO theater packages for tickets in NYC, Jersey Boys and Mary Poppins, with dinner and hotel stays. I've never seen such great, high quality prizes. I can't wait for the next one. Whoever organized this event is a genius. They can plan my fund-raiser anytime.

Tons of tricky trays coming up this weekend - any "must attend" events? Or any not worth the trip?
Anonymous said…
I wanted to thank the person who mentioned the TT in Allentown PA December 16th. I did call and mailed my check in got them in the mail already. I get two sheets at the door what a deal. They also told me no prize was under 25 and the tickets themselves were very affordable. I live in NJ and I will make the drive over there. I think it's worth it with all the Gift certificates to places in NJ/NY/PA. My friends and I are going to car pool there. We already have enough for the minivan. :) Maybe I will see some other regulars there. I also think this is one of the last ones before Christmas.

I see West Morris Mendham Class of 2009 is having a tricky tray on December 7. Does anyone know anything about it - is it as good as the Project Graduation event they hold in the spring?

I went to Seaside Park TT last night. It was like a used garage sale.

To the person who asked about any good tricky trays coming up this weekend. Yes, I attended the TT that is listed above this one and it was fantastic. The hall was a nice size and I enjoyed it a lot. I am a regular TT attndee adn I was skeptical about a new Tray but I had a great time, very nice prizes and they sound even better this year. My Aunt won the Baby basket on the biggest table they have and boy was it worth the tickets! What nice stuff they had inside and to make it even more cute, when you pushed the ducks bill it quacked. Too too cute! I am looking forward to this years and I am taking others with me. I would not miss for another TT listed here.

Forgot to mention that I went to the St. Bart's tricky tray in East Brunswick 2 weeks ago. Ladies take note from previous tricky trays in the past and be willing to grow. Go to some good ones in the area to learn what's out there to be had if you're having one.
3-4 years ago St Bart's was a good tricky tray. They've gone downhill. Only about 140 prizes for about 420 people. What were they not thinking of? The caller is the same caller they have every year. He's a weatherman on TV. Not impressed. Too slow for only 140 prizes we should have been out of there in nothing flat. People were talking too loud because they were bored.

Was at Corpus Christi's Tricky Tray last Saturday. It was the best ever! About 250 prizes, 250 people, goody bags for everyone, they served platters of cake/cookies on every table. Very organized. Nice program with detail on prizes. No hoopla at this one, no thanking 30 people during the Tricky Tray event at the microphone. Will definetely go back next year. #1.

Went to the TT for Sayreville Main Street Theater Company last night. Prizes were nice and ticket prizes were ok. One thing I must say it was way overcrowded and at some point they should have turned people away. There were wheelchairs knocking into people and people scattered all over. Rethink the people situation next year. I will be back next year!

we attempted to go to the hampton rotary tt on friday. apparently they decided to change the age for anyone coming in the door from 18 to 21 on the day of. it was because someone had put a bottle of wine in one of the trays. so instead of raising the age they should have just put a tag inside the tray indicated that there was alcohol in the tray and to pick it up after the drawing and showing your i.d.(which is what they do at every tt that i have attended) which left my friends and i very disappointed that we couldn't participate

Went to the TT at New Jersey Museum
of Agriculture very nice... Got lost getting there but it was worth the drive.

I went to the Tricky Tray today for Catholic Daughters of the Americas in Parlin. It was nice and the ticket prices were good but like other people who have been complaining lately I got used stuff mixed in my baskets. I understand people donate this stuff but a good tricky tray would check and double check to make sure the items inside are not used. When we are putting tickets in the basket we can't open them to see if things are used we rely on the people who are running these Tricky Trays to check there items. One of the things was used and probably in someone kitchen because it has grease stuck to it. Ornaments that someone had used on there tree and then put it back in a box and put it in a basket. It was scratched, scuffed and from the early 90's. PLEASE PLEASE CHECK THE STUFF BEFORE YOU PUT IT OUT! I spend good money and I don't want used garbage. I'm sure others feel this way as well.

I also went to the Museum of Agriculture tricky tray. It was well run, but I wasn't very impressed with the prizes. I bought the pack of tickets at the door and I had a hard time using up all of the first level tickets, and the second level was only slightly better. The highest level prizes were nice though, and the prices were great! All in all it made for an inexpensive night and I came home a winner, but I prefer the events were the prizes (values) are a little higher (start at $25).

went to tt for Dover Elks. it was ok. they really need to get better regular prizes. Too many cheap no name items, some good gift certs. The larger prizes were not worth 3/$5 or 2/$5 and I don't know about anybody else but a used computer is a no-no. They also stopped selling the 50/50 as soon as they started calling the reg. prizes. Why, sometimes when your winning you feel lucky and will buy more 50/50's. The caller was good, we were out by 9:30.
Anonymous said…
There is nothing on the St. Joseph web site about prizes. This info was supposed to be up by 11/15. We want to buy tickets but would really like to know the prizes....please post.
Anonymous said…
i also went to the dover elks tt. the regular baskets weren't great, but at least the ticket prices were fair on those (and there were a few things that were worth it)
the ticket prices on the specials were way out of whack, definately too high for the prizes they had.
also, no used items ever ! We pay good money at these events, if we want used items will will buy them at a consignment shop or garage sale.
i didn't get the thing about the 50/50's either, but i guess everyone has their own way of doing things.
the caller was nice and quick, so very happy to be out that early.

Did anyone attend St. Ann's tt on 10/12 - at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany; was looking for some feedback.

I attended the Sokol USA Gymnastics TT on Nov 10th and it was the nicest one I've been to in a long time. The ticket prices were very reasonable and the prizes definitely worth the money. Everything was brand new...no junky garage sale items. The Zeris Inn wasn't overly crowded and the food was great. They kept refilling the trays, so there was plenty of food. The night went quick, over 300 prizes and we were done in about 2 hrs. The caller was great...he kept the night moving. I vote this as the number 1 TT of 2006. I can't wait for next year's.

I just attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Boonton Tricky Tray and it was a very nice affair. I'm a little disappointed that they stopped selling tickets 1/2 hour before the calling began. The tickets were a little overpriced, too. The most bothersome thing about the whole event was the caller. He was OK, but he kept looking into the bowl as he was pulling numbers. I watched him drop tickets, while looking at them, then pick up more before choosing the winner. It looked as if he was searching for specific numbers. I don't think I'll be back next year if the caller is going to "fix" the winners by looking at the numbers first.

Thank you for the nice comments about the Sokol USA Tricky Tray. We organized this event in half the time most others are done and we put a lot of hard work into it. We're glad you had such a great time. Look for us in the Spring of 2008 or 2009 for the next Tricky Tray. We're going to try and outdo our first, so that'll mean even better prizes.

I agree with the comments about the Our Lady of Mt Carmel TT. The caller was totally looking at the numbers as he picked them. I wonder who he was related to at the table in the back that kept winning all the baskets. I'm skipping this one next year. I don't need to go to a Tricky Tray that's expensive where the winners are pre-selected.

Any input on the TT at Garfield Elks Club on Sunday Nov. 19th. By the tume I got there it was sold out. Next time I will buy my ticket in advance.

I went to Garfield Elks TT. I got there when it opened and she said they were sold out. I asked her why they didnt post it on TT.com and she said we sold the tickets last night and didnt have time, She let us in and said we could stand at the bar until a table opened up after some of the prizes were gone. Anyway, it was just ok. You really didnt miss anything. Would I go again next year? No.

Hi all we have been getting requests for our Tricky Tray December 16th in Allentown, PA. I know it's a little bit of a drive for some people so I thought what I can do was send you out a copy of our list of prizes. Along with the ticket prices. This way you will know it's worth your drive! If you would like a copy I will have it ready by the end of the week. Feel free to email me at maroulr@comcast.net

I went to the Tricky Tray for Pocono Mountain West Junior High School
in the Pocono's and it wasn't worth my drive. They made it sound a whole lot better then it was. Not enough prizes for the amount they were charging for tickets and the prize value themselves were just not worth it. I know it was there first one so my warning to them improve 2000% before you decide to do another one.

In response to this comment...

No one is taking direct aim at "VOLUNTEERS", but when you are spending $100+ dollars on an event, PER PERSON, you expect to be accomodated and not have to put up with crappy prizes and UNTRAINED volunteers. Often times volunteers get caught up in the moment and lose sight of the purpose of the event. I attended an auction in Woodbridge/Iselin just recently and one of the volunteers and a police officer almost got smacked because of their extremely nasty attitude and disposition. Granted, there are a lot of people in attendance, but be mindful that you have people there from all walks of life and people who will not put up with your anxiety attack because you are raising a lot of money. If you sell 400 tickets, then have prizes worthy of selling 400 tickets and not be so consumed with making that $10 per person at the door or overcharging for items that you can find in a good dollar store. Further, make accomodations for your people to make them comfortable and not just try to cram them into small rooms and expect them to be content.

I could go on and on here but at this point... you should get the message. If you are a good volunteer then we thank you for being a good volunteer. If your organization really needs the money, then act like you need the money and not have 400 people turn around and go back out the door because you are giving them your rear end to kiss when you don't give a darn about their comfort.

I am a serious tricky tray attender. I spend a lot of money.. I win a lot and I don't mind speaking out on behalf of my fellow tricky trayers!

Best Tricky Tray 2006:

Mother Seton - Clark, NJ

Iselin High - Iselin, NJ

Hands down...no competition!

In response to the comment resopnse:

I agree completely. If you treat people horribly, have substandard prizes and don't care about the comfort and well being of the people in attendence, then you've failed in your goal to raise funds for a worthy cause. If you want people to support your orgainzation and spend the money, you have to make it worth it. I am a serious tricky tray attender and I have no problem spending 100-200 dollars a night. I also win some very nice prizes. However, I'm not about to spend any money if I don't feel it's worth it. I'm not a philantropist who gives money freely just because I can. Some of these groups act like they are doing you a favor when in fact, the attendees are doing the orgainzation a favor. Treat people badly and they don't return. Word gets around, and pretty soon, the organization has a hall full of prizes and no one there to win them.

I'm a serious Tricky Tray attendee and I've been to several over the past few months. I've won prizes at all of them, but I know there are some I won't ever go back to. Dover Elks was OK. Nice, but nothing that jumps out as "oh my God I have to go back next year". Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Boonton: very expensive and the caller kept looking into the bowl as he was picking numbers. Not exactly a way to instill confidence of the random draw. St Mary's in Wharton: AWFUL!!!!! They never advertised it as a dinner and I was shocked to find admission was $40. Also, a single sheet of tickets was $12. What a rip-off!!Not even any discout for multiple sheets. The caller was so horrible and slow that it felt like I was slowly being pecked to death by birds. She never said which basket number she was on, so it was very hard to follow. She needed prompting from the audience to say what basket she was on. Too much chatter between baskets and there was no need to keep talking about ducks? Inside jokes in a room full of 300 people are not appreciated. She announced that this was her last year and all I can say is why did they keep her this long. The Dwyer School in Rockaway was nice, but it's not as good as it used to be. The prizes used to be much better, but the ticket prices were very reasonable. The best Tricky Tray I attended was at the Zeris Inn for the Sokol USA group. This was the most well run and organized Tricky Tray I've ever been to. The prizes were beautiful and ticket prices reasonable. The medium prizes used a sheet of 25 tickets. That was great. Most others make you but individual tickets at outrageous prices. The caller was great..he kept the night moving. There were no problems, no wrong prizes picked, they stayed in order and he called out each basket number so I could follow the program. This is the only Tricky Tray I'll look forward to next year. Well worth the price of admission, great food and great prizes. The other Tricky Tray organizers can take a lesson from these people. I can't wait for the Tricky Tray of the Year Vote, because I think it should be the Sokol USA event. There was none that I attended that could have been any better.

Yes don't be offended. Take the compliments on the good ones and the criticism on the not so good ones and make your tricky tray a success. You don't want to just make money that day. You want people whether they win or lose to walk away happy and want them to come back. My friend and I also spend a lot of money and there are a lot of good tricky trays out there. Competition is tough.

Its the end of the tricky tray season ba hum bug. I went to about 15 or more events this year. I say corpus christi in south river was the best about 170 people over 300 prizes. Yes I did spend $100 dollars but I won 2 prizes over $200 dollars and 4 gift certificates and 3 baskets. Ran very smoothly and they really mixed the tickets. Every basket was presented beautiful. I remember one year they had it twice hope they do that this year. I will certainly be there with my 5 friends.Ladies give yourself an applause..

I agree 100% about the Corpus Christi one. For such a small school. They collected many many prizes and thought of everything.

To answer the question about children. No they are not allowed at Tricky Tray events and definitely not allowed to put tickets into containers. It is gambling, and if you hold a gambling license for the state of NJ, it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to be in attendence, let alone participate. I've been to several where children were playing, winning and used as runners. They probably feel no one's ever going to check, so they don't have anything to worry about. But it only takes one disgruntled attendee to file a complaint, and the fines involved are greater than the profit they would make at their event.

What is the scoop on Roselle Catholic coming up January 19th? Did anyone go last year? What were the quality of the baskets like? Did they have a good ratio of baskets to participants?
Anonymous said…
I went last year. There were a lot of prizes and even more people! They had about 6 or so levels of prizes (gift certificates were in their own group). Because of the crowd they had to extend the time for people to drop tickets. The prizes were ok - but nothing spectacular. I may go again because it's really close to me.
Anonymous said…
Does anyone know which TT's are being done at the Hanover Manor in East HAnover? It's really close to me, and so convenient!
Anonymous said…
I liked Roselle Catholic's TT. It was inexpensive and they had a lot of gift certificates last year. They kept the night moving along even though they had a large crowd.
Anonymous said…
I thought Roselle Catholic had some very good prizes. The fact they have a variety of levels opened the night up. If you want to spend money, you can...it was a nice night out for me and my friends.
Anonymous said…
Roselle Catholics was nice. Too many levels though. I didn't like that the gift certificates were separate and the way they were combined didn't make sense.
Anonymous said…
I agree on the gift certificate level..too many..grouped strange..However there other prizes were good and the baskets were great.
Anonymous said…
I just want to say that I love that St Joseph's School whose Tricky Tray is Feb 1st has a link to a their list of baskets and grand prizes. I am definitely going to this one based on the trip to Disney grand prize. I think it would be better if organizations listed more info on their baskets and less about themselves and their cause. It is hard to decide between Tricky Trays on the same date, and to be blunt I am more motivated by the prizes than the purpose of the sponsors. I know to list you have to put in your website but it serves no purpose unless there is more information on the tricky tray on it.
Anonymous said…
A gift certificate is a gift certificate...it's something you get for free. If those gift certificates at the Roselle Catholic TT were grouped strange, keep the one you liked and give the other to a friend..
Just go and have fun..they have plenty of gifts. We had a lot of fun last year.

Will the power stay on this year for the St. Elizabeth's tricky tray on Saturday, or should we bring our flashlights???
Anonymous said…
I agree that Roselle Catholic has a lot of prizes! It's really crowded and with that many prizes (and levels of prizes) you can end up spending a fortune. I think I'll spend my money on the higher level prizes this year since the entry level really aren't usually that good, but I'll put some money into them since it takes a while to get through them and it's no fun sitting waiting if you have no tickets in!
Anonymous said…
St Joseph TT is on Thursday, Feb 1. I highly recommend this one!!!!!!!! It is at the Rockleigh Country Club next to Northvale. We were there last year and the baskets are UNBELIEVABLE!!!! there had to be over 500 baskets and no junk!!! We are going this year and the lady running it told me that they are going to have the over head projector with the numbers as well. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About the St. Elizabeth TT this Saturday: what did the blogger mean...the power went off? Is it worth going to? What're the prizes like? Is it crowded?
Anonymous said…
Last year at the St. Elizabeth's Tricky Tray there was a storm and the power went out while people were still dropping tickets. They ran on emergency lighting, then hooked up a generator with some lights and someone went out and got flashlights. After at least an hour (maybe two) delay, there was enough light to finish dropping tickets and then begin the calling. Then, we all came out to several inches of snow and ice after midnight!
(If you look into last year's blog around this time of year, you'll get more info.)
It's crowded, but the prizes are pretty good (at least $25 value).

Is it legal for alcohol to be present at a tt and children under 18 on the premises?
It was at the St Elizaeth TT last night. I thought it was very inappropriate for this to be allowed. Not enought table and chairs available for the clients I think it against the lawa for the alcohol and children to be present.

I was also at St. Elizabeth's. Too long of an evening! The "specials" tickets were overpriced at 3 for $5 when some of the prizes were $40 and $50 gift cards. To me, that's a regular prize.
As far as the kids, they seemed very well behaved to me. I have no issue with that - it's when there are 5 year olds running wild that I go nuts.

We went to St. Elizabeth/St.Therese's TT Friday nite, and the regular baskets were really nice and properly priced. There were about 111 Grand prizes that weren't for the most part grand (I was interested in only about 3),and the cost of the tickets for that level was way too much. The callers were nice enough, but said the name of every item and paused forever between numbers. Most interestingly of all, the people in the audience didn't follow their own tickets, and there were a number or recalls. What I found peculiar (and it may only be my observation) was that two tables who were obviously the families involved in the event, won a ton of the Grand prizes. I don't want to be sour grapes, but the volume of prizes they won was amazing!
It was a very long nite, and I hope they will consider grouping up the gifts with some of the gift cards next year to increase the value of the prizes, but reduce the number of prizes and the amount of time it takes to call all of those numbers. There were almost 500 prizes...approx. 369 regulars,111 grands,15 super grands, the big flat screen tv and the 50/50!

It's official! We've gotten the license and Bergen County Players' first ever tricky tray is being held at The Cotillion in Garfield at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2007.

Proceeds go to benefit the theater's building revamping & renovations in time for our impending 75th Anniversary season.

$25 gets you a sheet of first-level tickets, and a 4-course family style dinner. I've had their dinner, and it's delicious!

4 levels of prizes (regular, medium, large, and grand), some of which are REALLY interesting - we've got a Sopranos gift basket with a signed copy of a script!

We estimate over 200 prizes & baskets. Seating will be limited, so order your tix now! E-mail me at LarissaEsq@att.net. Details will be posted on the events list soon; I've submitted the listing and am awaiting its posting.

Regarding St. Joseph Oradell TT at Rockleigh Country Club...I can see it starting before we even go. We received our tickets and a flyer stating we can buy packages by mail. It also stated we must write our name and table number on each and every small prize ticket. After repeatedly calling for info regarding how many tickets on a sheet etc. we still have not received a call back. The school office has absolutely no info on anything. We really would like to know how many tickets are on a sheet so we know how many we want to buy and also because we wanted to get our info onto the tickets BEFORE we go to the event so we can just relax and enjoy ourselves without having to start organizing tickets when we get there. We sent for the tickets on December 6th and have been trying to get info ALL THIS TIME! I am sorry we didnt decide to go to St. Brendan's that weekend instead. Their TT is run excellently.

I was speaking to one of the moms from Roselle Catholic. She said they have some very excellent gifts this year for their Trcky Tray this coming Friday. Some of the prizes are: a flat screen TV and home theatre system, a digital camera and other electronics, tooth whitening, tickets for the Yankees, NJ Devils, Nets, many, many restaurant gift cards, Lenox items, designer perfumes, overnight getaways, Papermill Playhouse tickets. She said a lot of the local theatre tickets are coupled with local restaurants and make a nice package. I am definitely going!

For the st Joseph Tricky Tray, I called the number on the flyer, 201-261-0932, and the woman called me backed that evening. Her name is Genevieve. She had all the info. The packages seem to be a really good deal. Three of us ordered the large package and my other two friends ordered the medium. I would try the number again. She seemed very efficient and answered all of my questions. I was there last year....it was a really good evening.

You do not need to have a liquor license if people bring their own. Many restaurants have that same policy...they do not need the license as long as they do not sell or provide the alcohol.

About 4 years ago one of the schools had their tricky tray. People were allowed to bring liquor. Well the PTA got drunk. Decided to have a sale on the tickets towards the end. I wonder how many of you people actually support the businesses that donate these wonderful tricky trays.

I attended my first tricky tray last evening and was somewhat appalled with the behavior of the crowd. As I sat back and observed, I asked myself, "Are these the parents of our next generation"? I can only imagine how much work goes into these events, and to hear the mouths on some of the women were truly amazing.

To think I once thought I've seen it all.

While the prizes were really nice, I highly doubt those who attended NEEDED anything. But got so angry when someone won two or more prizes.

Step back, take a breath, and thank the organizers for their hard work. Then, take home with you the donor list and write one or two of them a thank you note. I did not see one person look into the donor booklet. Too bad..

Dear anonymous who writes: Regarding St. Joseph Oradell TT at Rockleigh Country Club...I can see it starting before we even go.

I am the chairperson of this event and I am sorry that you feel this way and find it necessary to make a negative comment.

The delay in receiving your discounted tickets, a priveledge most TT's don't even offer, is because we ordered and paid for these tickets and were told by the merchant we would have them within 3 days, that was 4 weeks ago, we only just received them on Friday. If you asked for the tickets to be mailed they will be in the mail on Monday, if you asked to pick them up they will be at the School Office after 12:00pm on Monday. At that point, you will see there are 26 tickets per sheet for the small and medium prizes.

The number that was given on the TT website for information is not the school office number, a dcision that was made on purpose. These women are very busy taking care of matters of the school and the children, not the TT. All fundraising efforts including this TT are done by Volunteers, and for this event, for which there are over 500 baskets, there are only 5 women in total working their very best to make sure this event is as big of a success as last year.

Although I understand your desire to receive your tickets and be able to relax that evening, I would appreciate your understanding that some things are beyond our control. We are doing the best we can. I can absolutely assure you that this TT event will be one of, if not the best, of the year.

Keep doing what your doing women of St. Joseph TT.

I attended the St. Joseph Tricky Tray last year and again purchased a whole table this year. This is an extremely well run, very organized event, not to mention the baskets are unbelievable. The amount of work and planning that goes into this one, from the decorations to the baskets, from ticket sales, discounts and directions it so very evident. These women think of everything. My experience with this TT has been nothing but wonderful.

Congratulations on the success of your event last year and best wishes for continued success this year. My friends and I are really looking forward to this TT.

Went to the Spotswood tricky tray Friday. Unfortunately they didn't do their homework. There weren't enough prizes for the amount of people attending. It was the first one of the year so it had a lot of people. I guess they feel they don't have to work at it because people will still come. Wouldn't you rather people go home happy that they had a chance at winning? People were complaining about the long line and that they wouldn't buy more.

Went to the spotswood one also. shame on them. there are so many places to solicite and they had classified as so so prizes. The line to put tickets in was 25 -20 minute wait. I asked to buy xtra tickets they had none left. Seems like they were just pushing there package deals. Well not everyone wants the package deal ?? Even though its the first tt of year my friends and i will not be attending and i also meet a few friends and they said the same.. Too bad.

I just went to talk to you tt peole. I myself ran a tricky tray for 5 years gave up my family life for 4 to 5 months spending every waken minute soliciting mailing and calling for donations. organizing the evening so everyone is comfortable.Buying the prize tickets ,making sure baskets are presentable, making sure enough prizes for each person ratio should be 1 for every person. Nothing was under $35.00. Making sure we solicited for goody bags for the people, nice door prizes etc I could go on and on. also i know that alot of family and friends who particiapte in a familys tt spend alot of money. well over $100 to $200 because it is a fundraiser for their niece or nephew, grandson or grand daughter. So when the table wins more prizes then you think before complaining. It is luck and also helps on the ratio of money and tickets bought. Yes please solicite the generous orginations and busineeses that contribute to make the event possible. I myself always mention to them if i am using especially a gift certificate. Oh thank you for donating this to ?tt. I know this will bring me back to your store or restaurant again? Come on ladies??

I attended Roselle Catholic's Tricky Tray on Friday, January 19th and I must say I was very impressed with the size of the event. However, of course there is a "HOWEVE" - the darn caller wouldn't mix the darn tickets. It seemed as though the majority of the numbers were being called from the series of tickets sold earlier in the evening. Roselle Catholic was very hard to find and I was lost for an hour. I even did a mapquest and asked a copy and we were still lost. I got there about 20 minutes before the caller started calling and I was rushing, but I managed to drop all of my tickets and I spent over $100.

Caller was good, but just wouldn't call certain series of numbers. There were a lot of quiet tables. Overall, I came out with expensive prizes, but I felt as though I should have won something else besides what I got. I am not sad though, because my items were coveted and were expensive.

Will I attend another? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT! Great job Roselle Catholic!
Anonymous said…
My guess is that there weren't as many tickets sold in your series of numbers, so that would explain why they weren't called as often. Remember - it's a game of chance. If there are 95 tickets that start with a "2" and 5 tickets that start with a "3", chances are that a ticket with a "2" will be drawn. Just because we were there in the beginning doesn't mean we won!
Anonymous said…
The problem with different sets of numbers in one category of prizes is...if you have all tickets that start with 2, as soon as the caller start with 5 you dont have to listen any longer, you already know you lost. At least if they have only one series of numbers in a category you get to have a little suspense while checking your numbers. Even if you lose it is still fun. Not fun at all when you don't even have a chance to check tickets. If organizers would only over buy tickets this wouldnt happen. Surely unopened rolls of tickets can be returned with a receipt.

I wonder what you can do to top last years....(but I have a secret....I got a glimpse at some of the numerous baskets)all I can say is "WOW".... I plan on spending my months salary on it. Well maybe not that much but alot. Yeah I know thats a bit much but there is nothing like the feeling of excitment you have sitting there waiting for your numbers to be called...and just having a night out with your friends and watching them win..what a rush.... especially if you win....and if you don't win it's even fun to watch the winners lugging their prizes to the cars. But ladies be warned I PLAN TO WIN......even if it's just a cleaning basket...wink wink...
You guys must have over 6 hundred baskets this year....I saw some 30 Coach bags listed and lots of other great stuff. I don't know how you do it.
Keep up the great work. Thank God for people like you...The Children and parents at SJS should consider themselves blessed to have such ANGELS by their side.

I'm so excited about our Bergen County Players TT happening in May! I just found out that The Melting Pot in Westwood is donating a huge gift basket, complete with everything you need for having fondue at home, PLUS a gift certificate for the restaurant! I love that place. That one's sure to be a hit, as is our Sopranos basket, filled with memorabilia, including a script of the pilot episode signed by the cast! Lots of gift certificates, including Medieval Times and other restaurants, as well as some toward B&B getaways, handmade items, a sightseeing flight... and don't forget, we're a theater, so we have some interesting & atypical prizes also!
Anonymous said…
Depending on where you purchase tickets they most places if you are buying in bulk are non-refundable even if you have the receipt. Maybe next time you can donate 10 rolls of a particular color ......
Anonymous said…
I'd imagine some are left over from prior years too.

Where is everyone going this weekend? The options seem limited!

The SJS Oradell is on Thursday feb 1. Rockleigh Country Club.....looks good. There is a link to school website where there is tt prize info.

Great TT's but $50.00 is alot to get in. I spend a good amount at a TT but can't do a $50.00 admission. Good luck to you.

Hey anyone know of any other TT's for this Saturday?
Anonymous said…
Hey now that someone asked about saturday anyone know of one for sunday that isn't a dinner?
Anonymous said…
any tt in Sussex cty in Feb?
Anonymous said…
It's very quiet - any reports from this weekend or suggestions for upcoming events?
Anonymous said…
does anyone know why more events aren't held on the weekends ? i would much rather go on a saturday evening or sunday afternoon, instead of having to rush around after work to try to get there in time.
Anonymous said…
Due to cost on the weekend. Way to expensive to hold events on the weekend. Lots of places book weddings.
Anonymous said…
Forget about the dinners and have them in school cafeterias, etc.!

PEOPLE ARE SHYING AWAY FROM TT'S THAT HAVE DINNERS ADMISSION $25 AND UP. I GO WITH A GROUP OF ABOUT 6 WOMEN WE WILL NOT PAY MORE THAN $10.00 ADMISSION. WE WOULD RATHER SPEND OUR MONEY ON TICKETS
Anonymous said…
Yes please save the money for your cause not the resturant with an expensive dinner!

I went to the voorhees tricky tray and i rate is as so-so. It seemed a little unorganized and they broke a LOT of rules involving kids being involved at the tricky tray. It had OK prizes and the tickets were decent price but it was so unorganized I felt that they should have really gotten more adults involved instead of mostly the band memebers. I liked the fact that the calling went quickly but resent the fact that they did not mix the numbers well enough to get a good mixture of people winning. Please, if you have a tricky tray SHAKE the numbers, people will more likely to go again if they felt they at least had a decent chance at winning last time. Get a container with a lid if you can because this serves as the best way to shake tickets instead of stirring them around with your hand...i heard a lot of people yelling shake em up etc. I prolly will not attend another one of these TT's as it was way too amateur.
Anonymous said…
If I have $100 to spend, wouldn't you rather have your organization get all $100? Otherwise your organization will only get $60 out of me if I spend $40 on dinner! There are plenty of schools out there and other halls (VFW, etc.) where you may have to pay a small rental fee, but if I spend $10 to get in, there's still $90 to spend at the event.
Anonymous said…
For those of you who want TTs in halls just remember that many VFWor like halls cannot hold more than 200- larger crowds are needed to make a profit worth the effort-also, donations are down and many prizes have to be bought, you need a larger crowd to offset those expenses.
Anonymous said…
Fair point about some halls being too small. However, Roselle Catholic does theirs in the gym and they have over 600 people attend. I have been at many tricky trays held in schools where the charity is completely unaffiliated with the school, so schools are certainly worth looking into.
Anonymous said…
But then you have to be careful, if it is in the winter and the school is closed, your event can not be held. Go to your local community center and see if they can give you the hall.

So all of you who were so excited about the St. Joseph's School in Oradell Tricky Tray - how was it????
Anonymous said…
St. Joseph's had great prizes, but it was so crowded. Getting tickets in to the small prize buckets was nearly impossible...too many pushy people!
Anonymous said…
St. Joseph School's Tricky Tray was awesome!!!!! This was the mother of all tricky trays (see the prize list on their website). Very well organized. I won a few baskets, which is always a plus. As with ALL tricky tray events there are some things that happen. The one problem I found was the ticket pulling. They tossed the tickets back and forth between two buskets and picked from that. I am a true fan of pouring the tickets in a separate container, shaking and then picking. I saw this at the St. John's Boy Scout tricky tray and everyone had a fair chance of winning. The Grand prize tickets weren't even taken out of the gift bags that were used next to the prizes, they were just shaken and pulled, I was VERY upset with this as well as my entire table. Some people were winning two and three at a time. Tickets get caught in the bottom flaps of those bags. Will I go back next year? I haven't decided yet. The $50 for dinner was well worth it. The committe running the event was very pleasant and accommodating and if I decide to go back it will be purely to support them and their children that attend the school, not with the hope of winning anything.

I went to St.Joseph Oradell tt last night and I have a few things to say. Initially, my friends and I were very hesitant to attend a $5o event because too much to spend for dinner and only 1 sheet of tickets and the packets they were selling were $50-$100 and up...lot for one tt as I like to attend a couple a month. However, after reviewing the prize list (great idea!) some of us decided to attend....and I am glad I did. The baskets, the baskets, the baskets, the baskets!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!! The set up was good as far as progressing from room to room to main ballroom with bigger prizes, however they really could have put maore prizes in the main room where there was so much space, the first 2 rooms were VERY crowded and many were complaining of not being able to get their tickets in. The cocktail hour was great, dinner and dessert, too but the prizes truly were spectacular. I would definitely attend again. One more thing, the lady on the committee said that those women on the stage were solely responsible for the whole evening start to finish. I as well as others at my table found this to be as impressive as the prizes. Alot of work for so few volunteers. For your timeand efforts and success ladies you should be proud of yourselves!

I went to the Parsippany Hill HS TT last night. Great prices and prizes. It really was done very nicely. The only bad thing was when the man was calling numbers for a short bit he was nerve wrecking and took too long. He only called numbers for a short bit so it wasn't so painful. Other then that this was a great one and people should go next year if they do it again.! Great job!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Pennsylvania Avenue School 27 Over the Rainbow Tricky Tray scheduled for 2-24-07 has SOLD OUT! Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets and we are very excited. See you in 3 weeks :)

My opinion on the TT tonight for NJ Cheer Academy All Stars from Bridgewater that was at the Whitehouse Station Fire Department. A little on the expensive side, but the prizes were good. There was a nice food spread that came with it but you ran out of most of it and it was very picked over. You also ran out of beverage items. Next year if you do this rethink that area. I do think it was nice for your first TT though. One other comment I must make when you got to the end of one color you allowed people with another color to place there tickets in the bags. You could clearly tell what color belonged where with table cloths. It really wasn't fair for the people who paid attention and put there tickets where they belonged. You should have never excepted other colors it's just WRONG!!! Other then that everything went really well. I must tell you the prizes were put together very nicely.

For the person who asked, the Bergen County Players TT is on May 31.

I ATTENDED THE CHEER ACADEMY TT AND THOUGHT IT WAS VERY NICE. GREAT PRIZES AND NICE PEOPLE. CHEER TO ALL YOU WOMAN FOR THE GREAT EFFORT PUT INTO THIS TT.
Anonymous said…
Great tricky tray Bridgewater Cheerleaders! The food was good and yummy desserts. I thought there was more than enough. Not sure why someone thought it was picked over.
The prizes were good. The people that put the wrong color ticket in had paid more money and put the expensive one in. I don't think that they honored the small table tickets in the larger prizes. So that was their loss.

My friends and I have the opposite opinion in regard to the dinner being part of the Tricky Tray - we actually look for these events. This is "girls night out" for us and we want it to be a nice experience, a good meal in a nice environment, that we can sit back and enjoy with the fun of Tricky Tray on the side. Sitting in a metal chair in a gym eating a sandwich that I brought, just doesn't cut it. I know from Tricky Trays that I have worked on that the meal does not actually cost the $40 that is charged, a profit is factored into each ticket that is sold so it is not like the organization is not "getting all the money". Each type of Tricky Tray has a following that likes it; high end with a shot at something expensive or the ability to win lots of little prizes. To each their own.

Attended Parsippany Hills HS Cheerleader's TT on Friday. Nice enough for their first one, but I can't understand how organizations get away with having kids at these events. It's gambling, and no one under 18 should be admitted. The prizes were so-so, very unorganized upon admission, people were throwing reserved table's coats on the floor and then stealing the table. The callers were OK, but it dragged on and on, one of the callers was soooooo slooow. Also, the tickets needed to be mixed better. Swirling them around in a bowl just doesn't cut it. The worst part was the cheerleaders doing the running. Several girls were carrying baskets in one hand while text-messaging on their cell phones with the other. The girls dropped a couple of bags where the tickets all fell out and scattered, and at one point, one of the adults yelled at them all because they were sitting in the hall, complaining that they were tired. You can't have kids at these events, especially girls. They are lazy. The prizes could have been set up better. They had them in the gym, which was huge and spread out, but one section didn't flow nicely into the other. Lots of room to walk around, though. However, the Grand prizes were squished into a six foot space in the cafeteria where all the people were seated. There was plenty of room in the gym for all the prizes. It was way too crowded in the cafeteria to have these prizes in there when there was a ton of room in the gym. All in all, it's not one I'd attend again. I also spent less money at this TT than any other, only about $60.00 instead of my usual $200.00. The prizes were OK, but not enough "adult" prizes. Lots of toys and games. It's too bad the organization lost out on some money. I know my friends at our table all felt the same. The brownies were very good.

Attended the TT in Whitehouse. Great prizes! The baskets were put together very well. Great job for a first time. Who thought they ran out of beverages? I didn't encounter that at all. It was very nicely done.

According to the NJ rules: (from 5:8-59 of the Raffles Licensing Law) - "... a person under the age of 18 years shall be permitted to play an on-premises draw raffle, including a Penny auction, when any prize offered and awarded consists of merchandise only."

(and by the way, gift certificates are considered merchandise)
Anonymous said…
About the Bridgewater TT with tickets I wasn't there but if you put wrong tickets in a bucket regardless if one cost more then the other. The wrong color should never be honored. If others were paying attention why should they lose out?
Anonymous said…
Thank you for the NJ rule. I honestly wasn't aware of that one. However, wouldn't offering a wreath made of dollar bills not be considered merchandise. Also, some of my friends have been debating about lottery tickets. A few heard that it's illegal to raffle off lottery tickets, others say it's OK. Does anyone know?
Anonymous said…
NJ Reg 5:8-32 states "No person under the age of 18 years shall be permitted to participate in any game or games of chance held, operated or conducted pursuant to any license issued under this act." The NJ Reg 5:8-59 does allow persons under 18 to play when prizes are merchandise only. Dollar bill roses, wreaths, etc. are cash prizes and therefore prohibit participation of persons under 18. Also, isn't holding a 50/50 raffle a cash prize? It seems that persons under 18 should not have been at the TT mentioned above if there was a money wreath and 50/50 offered.
Anonymous said…
It says "participate" - that means buying tickets, etc. There is additional language that says: "Whenever an organization shall conduct any draw raffle, or non-draw raffle which offers cash
or money as a prize, it shall cause a sign to be displayed adjacent to the place of the allotment of
prize(s) by chance as follows: "Persons under the age of 18 years are not permitted to
participate in this game of chance (N.J.S.A. 5:8-59)." That means those prizes can be offered where children are present, but they cannot participate.
Also the NJ reg 8-32 is for bingo.
Anonymous said…
Where's everybody headed this weekend? Lots of choices!
Anonymous said…
The reg says "participate in ANY MANNER". I guess this is subject to interpretation. "in any manner" to me means buying tickets, selling tickets, being a runner. It's all how you look at it. I guess that's why law makers stay in office. They make rules that are so vague that they lead to these types of debates.

Say what you want, but to me and my friends, it's a night out. Kids really don't belong at Tricky Trays.
Anonymous said…
Kids who need a baby sitter don't belong at tricky trays (IMHO), but I think it's fine for teens.
Anonymous said…
Give me a break!! "I think they belong" , "I don't think they belong"....everyone has their own interpretation...the fact is "participate in" means buying tickets, dropping tickets, etc. NOT just being present at these events. 50/50's are sold at basketball games, football games, family bingo night....should children not be present at these events either? Fine, if you in your opinion don't feel that children should be present, you are entitiled to your opinion, BUT don't interpret the law to your liking and your opinion. Under 18, it's the parents call. Sorry if you don't like it!

Just a quick question is there a dress attire for the dinner Tricky Tray's?

I enjoyed the Parsippany Hill TT and thought it was super!
Anonymous said…
I also attended the TT at Parsippany Hills and I thought it was more than nice for the first one!!! It was a lot of fun and there was a ton of room to move about. A couple of suggestions: More tables at admission would be helpful to move people in quicker, more signs/people to direct you into the gym would be good, and I agree that a majority of the regular baskets were aimed toward young children so I had to move around the table twice to find things of interest. The theme was flowing very nicely throughout the rooms, the callers (male and female) were very good and loud enough for all to hear, the cheerleaders were EXCELLENT runners as they were quick, efficient, mature, and congratulated each winner as they delivered the prizes, there were tons of complimentary desserts, and overall we had a great time. TT attendees really should cut the organizers of these events some slack as they are volunteers who come together to run these events. TTs by nature should be a relaxing time out to enjoy your friends, support the cause, and maybe (hopefully!) win some prizes. The volunteers do not come from professional TT companies but are just people from nonprofit organizations hoping to have a successful event to raise money. I don't even have a child at PHS but we really came to check it out because we are having a TT coming up and we enjoyed ourselves and would definitely come again if they do it next year. Bravo to all the organizers of this event!!!!
Anonymous said…
It's not the parent's call who attends. It's the State of NJ Gambling Laws that make the call. Gambling is gambling. Children under 18 can't buy lottery tickets. All it takes is one disgruntled attendee to screw it up for everyone.
Anonymous said…
Please read the rules! Under 18 can participate in non-cash (merchandise) drawings!

The question about the dress attire for dinner TT's...I go in presentable, comfortable clothes. I notice that it ranges from dresses to jeans with a nice blouse.

I know people are going to get all angry with what I have to say but I am going to anyway. My friend and I went to the TT tonight for John F. Kennedy PTO in Bridgewater. We paid 45 bucks for a dinner and it was not good. I have been to the dinners before you got dinner and dessert. With this you got some lettuce, chicken, and pasta. At one point as I was standing in line the people working it said sorry no more chicken. There was a huge line of people. How do you tell people that after they spent 45 bucks on this so called dinner. For the oh so yummy dessert you got a plate of cookies. When you pay this much money you expect dessert. NOT A PLATE OF COOKIES This isn't even my biggest complaint. They had this very odd raffle that I don't even think is legal or even moral. People were able to buy tickets like a 50/50 ticket and if you won you could go take a prize from the 2 lower level that you wanted. So other people if you put your tickets in that bucket lost out. It was like oh well. They just tossed our tickets out. No offense if I put my ticket in a bucket I should have a chance to win it and not just have my tickets thrown out. It was like they were greedy. Where is the morals in that? But don't worry it gets even better they clearly state on TT.com that you will receive a goodie bag valued at over $100.00. Boy was that a crock! You got a bag full of junk and coupons for places that no one really even shops at. So if I wanted to use a coupon I would have to spend more money. That in no way shape or form would equal out to 100.00. Why would you state that? I got a few cheap books, a stuffed animal, gum, tic tacs, and coupons. If that is worth 100.00 then I must be going crazy. I understand that everyone works hard at these events and it's not easy to get all the donations let alone wrap and everything else that comes with it. If you are going to state something then you should have that quality. The prizes were great and so wonderful. I did win and I'm not complaining about that part at all! It was all the other stuff that left a sour taste in our mouth.

Went to the Alpine School tricky tray in Sparta. Wonderful prizes - from $50 to over $100 on the regulars (and there were about 200 of them) for $5 a sheet. Lots of snacks and well organized, but VERY crowded.
Anonymous said…
Hey all I also went to the tricky tray at John F. Kennedy PTO in Bridgewater. I'm with you on most of your comments. I guess as a parent I probably should not say more then that. What were they thinking? I didn't hear about not having enough food, but I was one of the first in line. :)
Anonymous said…
AFter reading the past few comments, I noticed one common factor. It doesn't matter who's opinion is correct, children under 18, bad food, not enough prizes, etc. All that matters is if the attendees are not happy, then the organizers who hope to have a second TT will find their attendance diminishing. If the people aren't happy, they don't come back, they don't bring friends, and they make sure they tell everyone they know how bad they thought the TT was. We all realize the organizers spend a lot of time setting the events up, but if there are a lot of things under their control that if they don't pay attention to the details, it could all blow up. Unfortunately, you have to cater to the masses, because they are the ones who support the organization. Disappoint too many people, and these events will be filled with lots of prizes and empty tables. Also...this seems to be a problem at most TT's...keep the numbers quick and flowing. No one likes a slow caller who drags out the evening.

HELP! Please respond! We bought 1 roll (2,000 tix) for one level of prizes. After making all of our packets, we only have 100 strips of 15 (15/$10) of tickets to sell the night of our auction. Would you rather we A. just use those until we sell out and have a better chance of winning or B. buy another 2,000 roll with nonconsectutive numbers. The non-consecs are a huge pet peeve of mine, but I dont want people unhappy. We didnt realize we would sell out (obviously) but now I dont know what to do. Please help out!
Anonymous said…
You are obviously going to have to buy another roll even though they are not going to be consecutive numbers. If you dont you will lose money for your organization and people will be really mad if they cant purchase additional tickets. Also wouldnt be fair to all who dont wish to purchase packages. There wont be any at all for them. That would be a MAJOR mistake. Just dont make it worse by getting a different color. This should go on your checklist for next year...buy more tickets. Aside from your particular TT, I see this occurance at TT's who have been doing it year after year and they still do not have enough tickets. Why cant they just overbuy and keep them until the following year. Which TT is yours and when is it?
