No you are 100% correct in placing your rules in the program. The people who usually complain are the ones who usually are cheating. The rules should be the same no matter what TT you attend, and these ladies know this. They just hate it when they get caught, or are prevented from winning because they cheat. Stick to your guns. These are probably the same women who get to the tables first when the goody bags are at the seats and go through all the bags taking the really good give-aways out of the bags before the others arrive at the table. This is a great website and I've learned a lot from the comments of other TT attendees. No matter how hard you try, you'll always have people spoil the evening because they can't win without cheating.

I have to agree with the person above regarding the Reverend Brown TT this past Friday.

The caller was awful. Dumb jokes, repeating what the prize was over and over made the night drag on. Next time print out a list of the prizes, hand it out and just call the numbers.

The small bowl used to shake the tickets was pathetic and the cardboard box used for the 50/50 was even worse! Hopefully the organizers will read this and get the message.

The Noah's Ark TT once again had great prizes and was well organized. The only thing they did wrong was to use different color tickets for the regular trays and 50/50. It's no fun to hear the color of the ticket called before the number especially when you only have one color ticket because you bought them ahead of time!
Anonymous said…
Of course you shouldn't bend the tickets! It is cheating. I've seen a person that had bent her tickets boldly ask for her money back, once she found out that hers wouldn't be pulled. Could you imagine someone admitting to cheating and then want her money back!!

There were so many tricky trays this weekend - where are all the comments????

I attended the Green Twp. PTA Tricky Tray. I felt is was well organized and the prizes were nice (and most importantly, matched the price of the tickets). Good food, too! It's nice to get a salad instead of those hot dogs that have been boiling for hours (or days!). The calling could have been a little better - the woman who started was really moving along quickly, but the men were not as quick - making more commentary and not quite as clear in their speaking (but louder). Just one question - why did we put our door prize tickets in a buckets if they weren't going to be used for the door prizes?

I attend the ARF TT friday night. The TT wasn't bad but not one of the better ones about 350 people and kids were there? not enough prizes for all the people. The worst was some older gentlemen was calling and make crude remarks. ex olive garden donated gift certificate "he states Olive garden that place is the pits" maybe a joke in his mind but i don't think Olive Garden would of appreciated it. Also if the number was 0523 he would say may 23 rd? Then the number was 0541 he says May 41st (what planet is he from) also the had some Indian collectible doll "He said I have a joke abou this one but I will tell yous later? I could go on and on thats just a few? Don't TT organizers know this ruins the evening. One good thing they didn't pull bent tickets "sorry cheaters" they had alot of bent tickets in buckets. Aren't you guys ever going to learn and stop wasting your money??
Anonymous said…
I enjoyed Green Twp. too. I wanted to know about the door prize tickets too. They called door prizes by table number. If they weren't going to use the door prize stubs, then just have us throw them away. I've had other TTs ask me to do that. The food WAS great. But, they could have used more it was so great. The salad was awesome and it got sold out really quick. The woman caller was definitely the best. It seems the men try to be too loud and put their mouths so close to the mic that it comes out fuzzy.

Yes the animal resue tricky tray in East Brunswick could have been OK since that had a lot of good gift certificates. But the caller made too many rude and crude remarks. Please don't be offensive callers! He took too long and they should have switched callers. I will not go again if that man calls. Please have a new caller next year. I know you work so hard to collect the donations. Be nice to all the business organizations that donate.

Oh My!! What an Explosion of Tricky Trays this Friday & Saturday. Where's the buzz on best choices for us novices in NJ?

I'll be at the Lafayette TT...this group always does a nice job, quick calling, great prizes. My friend won a bitty baby there last year and I won a grouping of dinner gift certificates!

I will be going to the SCFA TT this weekend becaus i donated to it and like to attend those i donate to plus the prizes are good and the caller is decent...can't remember anything else but If i dont remember anything bad about a TT its usually pretty good...lol

Lafayette tt is great. I'll be going there again.

Anybody have any info about Sandyston-Walpack? Has anyone gone in the past? How are the prizes? How are the prices? Is it crowded? etc., etc., etc.

Don't know anything about the Sandyston-Walpack TT. I'll be at the Lafayette TT. Wish me luck!!!

I went to the Sandyston Walpack TT last year. It's a great TT. Lots of gardening stuff (which I love). Great prizes, I'll be there again tonight!
Anonymous said…
Hi, this is the Green Twp. PTA wishing to thank all you Tricky Trayers who came to our TT on the 21st. Thank you also for the complimentary remarks and your criticism. I will include both in my binder for next year's PTA board to use in their planning. We had our most successful Tricky Tray ever. We hope you all had fun and went home with some good prizes. See you next year!

WHAT A TT!!! Stillwater school's TT was awesome.

Great prizes!
Great caller!
Great prices!
Free snacks and water!
Very organized!

I will be back next year!

Only negative was an obnoxious group of people (box kicking girls) who screamed sooooo loud everytime someone that they new won. I love enthusiasm, but that was to much.
Anonymous said…
I attended the Sandyston-Walpack tricky tray. The prices were reasonable and they had a lot of prizes. I prefer a little bit higher end, though. I'm used to going to tricky trays where a $50 gift card is on the first level. I was surprised there were no iPods, video gaming systems, etc. which have become common at tricky trays. As a previous poster noted, they had quite a lot of gardening baskets. I also though there wre a lot of gift certificates for places out of the immediate area.

There were a few other tricky trays in the immediate area last night - Sandyston-Walpack, Lafayette and Stillwater. Any comments on those so if they are the same night again next year, I'll know where to go?
Anonymous said…
I went to the Lafayette TT last night. Lots of regulars and tons of higher end specials (ipod, nintendo ds, american girl dolls). Their mega specials were unbelievable! Huge outdoor pavillion, furniture, fire pit, tree...all as 1. Lottery board with tons of tickets on it. Nice quilt hand made by their PTO.
Everyone seemed to be a winner, some multiple. They sold pizza and salad and had free baked goods.
My friends and I had a good time,(we also all won...yeah us!!!)
I will definately go back next year.
Anonymous said…
I attended the Lafayette TT last night. Lots of nice prizes. They had regular trays, specials, super specials and Mega prizes. Mega prizes deserved to be called that but the specials and super specials could have been combined. Too many different color tickets and different price levels if you ask me. Special and Super Special tickets were pricey. Caller was very good. I loved that he was throwing out bent tickets! Not the best TT, not the worst.

people get overly defensive about anything but outright praise. I hope Avendell and all TTOrganizers/attendees are adult to the point they can accept constructive criticism. If the only comments posted are praise, no one learns anything and we really aren't sharing what we feel.
I was in stillwater last night and it was a nice balance of prizes/prices to the number attending. Sadly, I was seated by chance near that loud group of enthusiastic people mentioned earlier. Stomping and kicking while screaming in bleacher seating is dangerous and should of been stopped. They did promptly stop someone from using an airhorn. I felt badly for the woman who made a spectacle of herself everytime she won. She would stand and face the crowd - scream (long and loud) and do almost a touchdown dance. Some laughed at her but many wondered what compelled her to act so bizarrly. while the group in the stands was loud and happy, they didn't slow down the ticket verification process.
Anonymous said…
I was at the Lafayette TT last night. Many nice trays. 3 different prize levels plus a mega level. The megas were amazing and were vaued at $500 and up. Tickets were priced fair and they had a value pack for sale which saved some money. I enjoyed the pizza/salad for sale as I came after work and wouldn't have had time to eat otherwise. I heard the caller throw out bent tickets several times. Overall it was a great TT and a great night.
Anonymous said…
Stillwater was phenomenal! Kudos to you all. Nice prizes and prices, and the calling was quick. I loved it when you tossed out a bent ticket for everyone to see! The free food was such a plus. Normally, you'd have to pay a dollar for a bottle of water. The noise was a bit much to stand from the bleachers though. I get really excited too; but it made me jump out of my skin every time they won and I had to start covering my ears after the first three or four times. Best TT I've been to in ages though...I Shall Return!
Anonymous said…
Went to the Lafayette Tricky Tray on Friday night. So glad that I chose this one as there were several going on. The prizes were great, the caller was great and threw away bent tickets. About 6 or 7 mega specials that were out of this world! It was definately a great Tricky Tray that I will attend again next year!

We went to SCFA Animal Shelter TT at Pope John last night. What a great Tricky Tray! Over 300 regular trays. Ticket prices were great. Great Specials and Super Specials. Organized very well. I'm so glad I went. Wish I wouldn't have wasted my time at the Lafayette TT the night before.
Anonymous said…
Planning a TT...what were the great prices at the scfa animal shelter TT? Thanks for your help!
Anonymous said…
went to the scfa tt...didn't find it as great as the other poster. tooo many regulars...ticket pricing ok.
Anonymous said…
SCFA Animal TT at Pope John last night was really good. A whole wall full of gift certificates valued $25 and up. One of the super specials was valued at $250 for a bunch of restaurant gift certificates. Lottery trays and wine trays. Lots to choose from. I'll be back next year to support them.
Anonymous said…
wow i must say I never have seen anyone complain about having too many prizes...I think the more pizes there are the more chance that the trickytray will have a variety of winners and be more successful next year. I supported the tt and even donated and I thought it was one of the better ones I have gone to. I think they had a few new people on the TT committee b/c it didnt run as smooth as it usually does, but if there were new people or new people were running I am sure they are working out the kinks. I was glad to see they called the number 3 times and then went on to the next ticket and that there were no bent tickets being called. I hope that the function was a great success and i will definitely be back next year!
Anonymous said…
To the previous poster, just curious which TT you are talking about. It helps to let us all know.

My friends and I love this blog. I'm so glad everyone is voicing their opinion about the TT in Sussex County. I think we have the best Tricky Trays, most of them anyway! We go to almost everyone and we are hooked. I'm still waiting to hear from two friends that went to Sandyston and Lafayette/Walkhill...will update when I hear.

P.S. Love that TT organizers are listening!

Went to the Old Bridge Schirra School tricky tray on Friday. The caller was good. We were out by 9:00. They had some good gift certificates. Not sure if it was their first, but not a bad little one. I'd go again.
Anonymous said…
On Saturday I went to another tricky tray. Vestry of Holy Trinity church. The caller was very slow. She read everything. By the end she stopped doing that but it was too late. We didn't get out until 11:00 PM and we had waited in line for 1/2 from 5:30. They did have some prizes that could have been combined, but the gift certificates were good. I wouldn't go back to this one.

I heard the Mendham High School Tricky Tray is this week. Does anyone have any details? What time do the doors open and what time do the drawings begin?
Anonymous said…
To the poster above who complained about too many lower level prizes, I can totally relate. I wasn't at the same tricky tray as you, but I have been to some where there are over 200 prizes with values of only $10. So, when that's the case, there truly are too many prizes!
Anonymous said…
now if they have values of only 10 dollars those are door prizes to me. But the one I went to on saturday was SCFA and all the trays were high quality and definitely not worth 10 dollars...more like 35-50 for regular trays (and I know from asking them and donating trays there for the past two years.) only thigns that were less were Gift certificates and those were mostly 25-50 dollars. I heard one person who went to the Sandyston school really loved it and said it was the place to be at on friday night. They were impressed with the gifts, the prices etc.
Anonymous said…
I was at Sandyston this year and have been to SCFA in the past. Based on my experiences, I like SCFA better. To me their prizes are better
Anonymous said…
also want to add that the prizes should go together. For instance why would you put a gift certificate for a gardening center WITH a kitchen sink faucet and call that a special?
Anonymous said…
Lafayette Tricky Tray was done well again...didn't win anything, but had a great night with my friends! Walkhill is a comfortable spot to handle a large group....trays were very nice...MEGAS WERE GREAT....and the caller was really cute!

Also attended the Reverend Brown one...getting a bad rap on the blog...you could definitely put up with the slow calling for all of the beautiful trays. This is also one of my favorites
Anonymous said…
I also went to the Holy Trinity church tricky tray I thought it was really nice. It was a little loud and a little hard to hear. They only let 180 in so not over crowded and I thought the prizes were really nice. I think this is one worth going to again next year. Although the strip tickets were a little high.
Anonymous said…
Old Bridge Schirra School was not a good as I thought it should have been. Not enough prizes for sure. On the same table was a Ipod, American Girl Doll and a 25 g'cert to Applebee's. Anyone else seeing a problem here. So it was no surprise we were out by 9. They also clearly stated no kids. When someone who was working there knew someone who brought there kid they said let them in. They told people if anyone asked to say she was 18 she was clearly no older then 14. If the rules are there they should apply to everyone. I am not anyone who has anything to do with this school I am a regular Tricky trayer who thinks if you state something stick to it. Not fair to others! Then standing in line to put tickets in the buckets and the parents were acting like kids on who does not like who and who said what. I didn't know if I was back in 4th grade or at a tricky tray for adults. All around they should be ashamed of themselves. Not a tricky tray worth going back to.
Anonymous said…
Did anyone go to the Tricky Tray at Sacred Heart in South Plainfield? Just wondering how it was...
Anonymous said…
Thanks to those who've inquired & who've been buying tickets to the May 31 Bergen County Players Tricky Tray - keep those checks coming!
Anonymous said…
Iagreewithanonymous who said *if you state something stick to it* mainly because one of the ladies i go to tricky trays with sometimes babysits and has been unable to go to some of the tricky trays because of no one under 18 allowed and then when we went to that particular tricky tray, there were kids and not only kids but infants. I have nothing against children, but i bet they missed out on a lot of money from people who would have gone to it if they had known that they werent going to stick to the rule. Also this same friend of mine went to a tricky tray that had posters out saying kids were allowed and when she got there, people with kids were being turned away because they said they didnt want kids there. Now that ticked off a LOT of people because of it being posted as being kid-friendly. personally, I like to go to ones without kids only because a lot of parents are letting these kids run about without watching them, ive seen these kids put their hands in bags for the trays and bring tickets out etc. basically from what i have seen, it just runs smoother usually if it is no one under 18 allowed.

Friday May 18th is a TT in Port Monmouth, NJ. It is for a blind association. I went last year and it was great. Very well organized, great prizes, lots of help. They even had a local boy scout troop delivering the prizes to the tables, so there was no reason to have to get up! 50/50 if I remember was 600 to the winner. I can't wait to go again!
Anonymous said…
What is PENNY AUCTION ? Is it similar to a tricky tray.
Anonymous said…
I attended the Mendham High School Project Graduation tricky tray last night. I must say, I was disappointed. This used to be one of my favorite tricky trays because of the number and quality of the baskets (they got my vote for best tricky tray a couple of years ago). This year there were only 100 baskets in the first level and they were $25-$50 value. I remember from previous years there were about 200 in the first level and the values were probably $40 to almost $100. This year they had an intermediate level with prizes from about $50-$100 dollars. There were 60 of these - and the tickets were 3 for $5 - a little pricey. The next level (30 prizes over $100) were $5 a ticket - yikes! On the positive side, it wasn't that crowded (I guess the word got out that it wouldn't be fabulous like the one a couple of years ago), the prizes were great quality, the snacks were fantastic, no bent tickets, and they didn't get carried away with door prizes.

i am goingto the Holy wisdom Byzantibe catholic penny auction in flanders.. don't know what it is so i will report back..
Anonymous said…
went to the homestead tricky tray. the prizes were only so so as they have been in the past but i know people that work there and i support their group so i wanted to go just for those reasons. my suggestion to them is to make the prizes a little more high end. the prices were ok too it was just another night out i guess
Anonymous said…
Please note Holy Wisdom has not sought out wide advertising of their events. This is a small tt with limited seating and small prizes. The 50/50 is usually around $100 to the winner and last night was a good night with the winnings pushed up to $161. The Ladies Guild do their best and there are some nice prizes but the majority of the big prizes would be found on the regular tables of any other tt. There is a small group of regulars that attend who understand and accept that the prizes are small but the spirit is commendable.
Anonymous said…
I attended the 2nd annual Ryan Doltz Memorial Fund TT at Dover HS last night. As I stated previously after attending last year, this EVENT should NOT be missed next year! Again: lots and lots of trays w/ nice prizes, very well organized, snacks were really good also. The first caller was awesome: loud, clear and fast!! For this being only their 2nd time doing it, and having probably over 400 baskets, they're certainly on the right track to have a successful event every year to come! GREAT JOB, RYAN DOLTZ MEMORIAL T.T. COMMITTEE!!! See you next year!!!
Anonymous said…
St. Ann's Tricky Tray prizes last night were ALL fabulous! Everything NEW, wrapped beautifully, and very organized. However, the number caller was PAINFULLY slow. She was asked numerous times to speed up the calling and did not. On the way out we overheard the comments from the attendees how they were very upset with the slow calling. This hurts attendance for the following year. I don't have any affiliation with At. Ann's but I am Catholic and send my children to a different Catholic school and know how hard it is to raise money so the school can thrive so with that in mind I like to support our fellow Catholic Schools.
Anonymous said…
i also attended the 2nd annual Ryan Doltz Memorial Fund TT at Dover HS last night. i agree, lots and lots of trays w/ great prizes, very well organized. GREAT JOB, RYAN DOLTZ MEMORIAL T.T. COMMITTEE!!!
Anonymous said…
Agree 100% with the poster above about St. Ann's! The prizes were nice and matched very well to the price of the tickets. I really like that they had the numbers on a screen - especially since it was nearly impossible to hear! One other thing to add - two breaks is excessive (and no one wants a break in the middle of a level). If you're going to have a break, make it at the end of a level - not in the middle.
Anonymous said…
You're right about St. Ann's breaks I forgot about them...one is enough and at the end of the level like you said. The screen displaying the numbers was great! The caller didn't have to say "ticket number" before calling each number..yeah...we know it's the ticket number, the helpers on stage should have assisited more with the shaking of the tickets and handing the ticket to the caller this might have sped up the number calling.

I went to the tricky tray in Garfield on Saturday night. It should be called a garage sale. If you can't get enough prizes then do them every so many months not once a month and call it a tricky tray. Two things I won were used! Why would you put it out??? To boot there was one lady who licked every one of her tickets. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. I saw one lady said something and they did not do anything about it. When I say lick I mean full lick on each ticket. I shiver with the thought of watching it. WARNING ANY REGULAR TRICKY TRAYERS STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE!!! I know it's for the animals but it was just nasty!

St. Joseph's 2nd Annual Tricky Tray was held last night in East Orange, NJ

I am an avid Tricky Tray fan, and this was one of the best I have been to this year. The prizes were absolutely out of sight and the prices for once were so low you felt guilty winning a prize.

The folks who were in charge of the auction this year are newcomers and took a little longer to get started because they ran out of sheets, but the prizes were fantastic. I took home 10 huge baskets. They made a lot of money and could have made triple the amount. They are to be commended. They could have used a little more help, but they pulled it off just fine.

The 50/50 was $4,900. They even let kids in. Hey, I told them to put me down for next year!
Anonymous said…
St Anne's TT: Please take this as constructive criticism. First, the speaker system at St. Anne's is awful. I hope they use some of the winnings to upgrade the system. Screen was terrific idea to display the #'s. I agree with all the other posters that the caller was VERY slow. We all sat in metal chairs for 5 hours (no tables) and had to listen to ad-libbing from the caller all night. At one point she admonished the crowd to keep their voices down and then scolded the children in the hall. (Dont invite children if you expect them to behave as adults.) I personally thought the children were well behaved. Lastly, save your thank-you's for the committee privately. A general 30 second thank-you is enough and then start calling tickets. We spent over 20 minutes listening to individual thank-you's at the beginning of the event !
Anonymous said…
Why does the town of Garfield have so many tricky trays????
Anonymous said…
Garfield has them for the pets but if they spread the tricky trays out more over the year they could collect nicer things make more money and get people to go back.
Anonymous said…
I go to the Garfield "Animals Need You" TT whenever I can to support the cause. It's ok because I don't end up spending a lot & the people tend to be nice. Plus, once I won the 50/50 - not a lot of $$, but hey, a win is a win, right?

That's just a different sort of animal (pun intended) than what most of you are used to.

For a more traditional sort of TT (with a fun theater twist), come to the Bergen County Players Tricky Tray on 5/31 at The Cotillion in Garfield! Tickets are still on sale. It will NOT be crowded, except with the hundreds of prizes, we will NOT call bent tickets, and the dinner will be good. Half of the time, *I* will be calling the numbers, so if I'm going to slowly, you have my express permission to come up & slap me. :) Every time I think we've got a ton of prizes, more come in. I have no idea how we're going to get them all to the place!! It's really insane... come win some & help me get rid of 'em!
Anonymous said…
I would love to go to ALL the Tricky Trays listed except I can't afford both a baby sitter and the cost of tickets. I spend around $60 at each one. Baby sitting costs $10 per hour. I'm not saying to allow children to attend but just keep in mind that it does hold a lot of BIG spenders back. I have friends that spend a lot more then me and they feel the same way.

St. Mary Elementary School Tricky Tray Review. In a word AWFUL!!!! Disorganized from beginning to end. Not to mention, the prizes lacked luster. Tickets weren't even checked when you entered the event. That should have been a clue that the evening was going to be a free for all. The "ladies" that were running the event were not helpful and quite rude. After being bounced around from a few of the "ladies" that were running the event I finally was able to purchase 50/50 tickets only to hear the women behind the table inform her "co-chair" that she was putting the money from the 50/50 in the basket pile and hadn't seperated the 50/50 money from the time she started selling 50/50's. Guess that would explain the mere $647. pot. Smells FOUL to me!! My thoughts are half that money was misplace into the basket "ticket" pile. UNFAIR!!! There were no door prizes and NO RUNNERS!!! Food was awful. Poor theme, awful centerpieces. I have never been to a tricky tray where I had to retrieve my prize. Sounds like poor planning to me. The evening was then capped off by one of the "co-chairs" waving a dollar bill in the air requesting that a male guest take his shirt off!!! Very inappropriate and in very poor taste. I can officially SCRATCH St. Mary Elementary School Tricky Tray off my list!!!!!

Anyone going to the St. Francis Tricky Tray this weekend? I went to the St. Ann School one last week and won several baskets including a huge classroom basket. It was an amazing event and now I am hooked on Catholic school tricky trays.

Went to the Westfield Day Care tricky tray last night and it was wonderful. The food was delicious and the baskets were beautiful and imaginative. Ticket prices were expensive, probably the most expensive that I have seen, but the baskets were so full of certificates and other goodies, that I thought it was worth it. The caller was great. It was their first Tricky Tray so here is some constructive advise for next time - the odd baskets on one side of the table and even on the other was confusing, please line them up in numerical order, try and start on time. Also we loved the pick you own gift certificate feature, just move it along faster call the numbers and have them line up to pick. Really a great job, a fabulous job considering it was their first one. We will be back.

I went to the tt for South River High School. It must have been there first one. Unorganized, started really late, not enough prizes, when people did not respond to ticket numbers they put them aside, they let children run all the alcohol baskets. At times it was painful to listen to the one caller shout so loud. I know it's a good cause for the kids but next time you might want to go to a few tricky trays before you decide to have one.

I went to the Mount Olive TT last night. (Saturday the 12th). I have to say they were very organized. They had a great food. They called the numbers very quickly. There prices for tickets were fair. Much better if pre-purchased. The large prizes were nice, however their regular trays were not as nice as last year. I think its worth going back next year.

I went to Jefferson High School's Tricky tray on friday night and although I have been to this one before, I;m at a loss to know if i will go back. The food was good and the prizes were really good too and I came home a winner, but I had an unpleasant experience that makes me wonder if the people running the show were doing their job corectly. First of all, they didnt shake the buckets-not even after people were screaming at them to shake the bucket up for over an hour. Then when they called my number another woman put her hand up for my prize and even though I had my hand up and our table was making noise, they didnt even come to my table to see if i had the right number (which i did and I have people at my table who didnt even know me vouching for my number) and then when i went to ask the guy who gave my prize away if i could see the ticket (just tomake sure it WAS the right prize) he had thrown it out and basically said well she had the right number...but i dont think he even checked the number or he gave it a cursory glance and that was it. That kinda ticked me off that this would happen because I spent a decent amount of money on tickets and there they go giving my prize away! The calling was slow untilthey got to a male caller and he sped up the calling. Well i guess it helps when you just dumpthe tickets into a bucket and give it a half-hearted stir and pick a number. I dont know if i will return after these experience...

Went to s/r high school tt last night. oh boy where do we start. They picked the tickets from the bag never dumping them in a bucket. Lots of kids, small kids even putting their hands in the basket. How can you have $10 sheet of tickets for a $25.00 gift certificate on same table as ria mar dinner for two. They surely didn't do a good job soliciting places in the area. Also about 300 to 325 people and not enough prizes? boring caller and them if the person didn't claim prize they put it aside. Someone put tickets in a strip 5 tickets together didn't even bother to seperate and then they were going to call that number? Whats up with that? Finally end of night a nice fellow called nice and loud and quick. Need to do better job next time if they want people to come back.
Anonymous said…
I also went to the South River High School tricky tray. I agree with the 2 previous people. Not run well. It took too long and why would you pull from a paper bag? The tickets do get stuck in the bottom. I did win so you can't call me a sore loser.

Just wondering if anyone has heard of followup on complaints of a tt awarding prizes to marked tickets. Marked tickets in any manner is illegal and could be a setup to award prizes to an ingroup of friends. We've all been to tt's where bent, or curled/crumpled or torn ragged tickets were pulled out. A few comments back mentioned a prize being awarded to someone who put in several tickets not torn apart. They may not be bent but the set of tickets is the largest in the group which counts as a marked ticket. Anyway, just wondering if any group has been cracked down on due to complaints after the fact.
I'm tired of seeing 'bent' tickets that end up winning. All versions of marked tickets should be disqualified. I'd love to see the bent ticket numbers be blacklisted any any other wins disqualified from that same sheet of tickets whether bent or not. Not sure why people tolerate this cheating like they do.

I went to the Temple Beth Am TT last night and in my opinion, it was one of the worst I have been to. The baskets were not worth anything near what they advertised and it was alot of junk in my opinion. Items that have been around for a long time. Someone at our table won a kids basket and the picture in it was used, dirty and even had writing on the back to one of her friends. Why do we spend money on tickets to take a chance on used gifts. There weren't any name brand items at all hardly. Overall, it was not a great experience and I will not go back in the future.
Anonymous said…
I also attended the Temple Beth TT last night and won a used item also. I won a bottle of wine that had previous wrapping paper stuck on the bottom of it. I just dumped it in the garbage on the way out. The goodie bags at each seat had unusual things in it. Mine had shampoo from a hotel and a bunch of advertisements. The bag it was in was worth more. This group needs to work on their event. The only good thing about last night was the food. As always, the manor provides outrageous food at any occassion. I don't think I will attend another TT run by that group. Very disappointed.

What's up for the weekend? What are the good ones?
Any thoughts on St. Andrews in Randolph or Sussex Tech up North or NJ Blind Citizens in Port Monmouth or Little House in South River for Central Jersey? Looking for quality prizes with ticket prices to match.

I went to Mount Olive's Tricky Tray last Saturday and here's what happened....

It was crowded and poorly run.

Who's been reading/following all the talk about the tricky tray in Mt. Olive that had a bottle of wine as a prize? See the link above and also the Mount Olive forum on nj.com has the whole discussion...

Does anyone know of any TT events in or around central jersey coming up at the end of may or even in June or July??????????

RE: Mt. Olive TT - I just read the linked article and all the blogs commenting on this TT. What a tragedy! These people lost site of the fact that the goal of a TT is to bring together all of the best resources available to try to raise funds for a worthy cause. There's so much anger being vented among these people, and far too much ego...they all think they are right. Ladies, get a life! You're working on a school fundraiser, not the end of the world. Aren't any of you aware of how you've damaged the school's reputation? Do you really think anyone wants to go to next year's event after all of the dirty laundry you're airing? Shame on all of you for being so petty. The biggest challenge an Event Chair has is to manage the collaboration processes of all interested parties. That means you have to be skilled enough to get the best out of your friends, and be smart enough to manage folks you don't care very much about too. Sure everything is still going to fall onto your shoulders, but as the Chair, you have to know going in, that you are going to carry far more of the load than anyone could have imagined. Perhaps if you all had committed to working together better, people would be saying great things about this event on TT.com. There's a saying that 'absolute power corrupts absolutely'. Staying humble is a prized quality that not only generates more friends for you and money for your cause, but also results in alot less heartburn!

We went to the Sussex County VoTech TT last night. It was great. Comfy seats and nice refreshments. Over 200 trays plus specials and super specials. Gift certificates galore. Run very well, we were out by 10:20pm!

I have to add that I couldn't believe when glancing into the ticket bags that people were still bending tickets. People that do this are nothing but trash. We go to TT's to support the organization and to have a good time. Cheaters suck and I will make it my personal mission to point them out whenever possible!!!

Went to the Little House Tricky Tray in South River last night. Very well organized (over 200 prizes and called in less that an hour and a half!) and really good prices. The prizes overall were ok - some were excellent (Coach, Wii), but they were balanced out by some less desirable (at least to me - stuffed animals, picture frames, Lenox). Just one somewhat negative comment - please let us know at the beginning that there will be 2 50/50 drawings!

Just my point of view on the nonsence that is going on about the Mount Olive TT.
First off it all started with a MAN posting a blog about a bottle of wine as a prize and it being illegle (excuse my spelling). He also had the need to name names, show pictures, ect...
If HE was truely concerned about the legal aspect of things, I think he would have just brought it to the attention of the people running it, but he choose to stay and participate in the TT, then write a blog about it.
I'm sorry but illegle or not, handling in the way that it was was an obvious attempt to trash the current MOPTA and all the volunteers at the TT.
Shame on him, and all the neg. posts, on both sides.
It was an awesome TT, even though I didnt win. Prices were good, prizes were nice, food was tastey and all the people I ran into were pleasent.
To the post above----I will definetly go again next year.
Also a BIG THANK YOU to anyone that volunteers there time for the school and our children.
Anonymous said…
I agree with the above posting, obviously this guy had a agenda and the bottle of wine just provided him with the ammunition he needed. I have seen wine and money trees at other Tricky Trays. He would have provided a service but instead launched a crusade.

Is there any restriction on the person who pulls the ticket at the Tricky Tray? I have looked at the state regulations and could not find one, but the rules are all over the place so it is hard to be sure. Can the person who pulls the ticket (Say the HSA president) have participated in the Tricky Tray?

Went to the TT in Port Monmouth for the BLind. Very well run! For only their second year, they have done very well. 50/50 went off ar $500.00 to the winner. Not crowded, over 200 prizes, 20 grand prizes, and money tree of $100, and lottery board with $100 of scratch offs on it! Will definatly go again next year! I won 7 baskets and a grand prize!

Took the trip to the Playgroups tricky tray in PA. It was a nice small one. They ran it well. No bent tickets mentioned and posted as well. Tops on the ticket containers. Mixed the tickets and called in about 1 hr. 15 mins. Nice gift certificates. Good job ladies!

I am a regular Tricky Trayer it's one thing to write how we feel here but for the man who posted the information for the TT Mount Olive you really went too far. There was no need to put all those names and information out there. If you had a problem take it up with the PTA or even the town. Maybe you are just a unhappy person that needs to find a new hobby.
Anonymous said…
Just wanted to thank anyone who attended our TT for the New Jersey Blind Citizens Association "Camp Happiness". We had a great time and hope those who attended did also. It was only our second year, and we are still learning, but if anyone did go, any comments, good or bad are welcome. We want to improve! Thanks again!

I went to the TT in Bemmerville and I think it was small but run very well. No bent tickets, they called the number only 3 times and they went fast. They shook the tickets up well and I would definitely go again.
Anonymous said…
went to the tt at the sussex cty vo tech and have to say, it was o.k., but the tickets prices for the regular sheets was too much for the kind of baskets they had. some of the baskets were probably worth $10-$15, others more but again sheets were too much.
Anonymous said…
i went to vo-tech too...i found a mixed bag of things. Some regular trays were great and some were so so. the trays i won were worth at least 30 dollars each and they were very nice but yeah it was expensive for the sheets. also i didnt stay around for super specials megas etc because i didnt like any of them
Anonymous said…
You all are talking about the Sussex County Vo Tech and that the tickets were too expensive, but we want to know - how much were they? And would you say $30 was the value of the typical tray or was it the most valuable?
Anonymous said…
I went to the Sussex County Vo Tech also. The regular sheets were 3 for $10. I didn't think this was expensive. If you looked closer, most of the trays had gift certificates sometimes hard to see if you don't look. I don't recall the price of the specials but they weren't bad. Not in comparison to the Lafayette Tricky Tray at Walkhill, there the price of tickets was ridiculous for the amount of prizes, you might as well have gone to Atlantic City and made better use of your time and money.
Anonymous said…
I attended the tt and read all the postings on the Daily Record Blog. The women running the MOMS tt were rude and way too greedy for me. They hounded you to buy more tickets all night. They called one person who only bought three sheets "Cheap" and said "Why'd you come if your not going to spend". The MOMS PTA was totally out of control. I can see why this man was irrate.

Stay away from Mount Olive. Their reputation preceeds them.
Anonymous said…
Well, I can see the same people who are commenting on the Robb blogs are also commenting here. I guess they have nothing better to complain about or no one else has come up to exploit. The Mount Olive Tricky Tray was very well run, I have never encountered nicer people, nor did I hear anyone call anyone cheap. I did however, hear a lot of "thank you" and even more "good luck" after tickets were purchased. The only thing I can complain about is the lack of speakers in that cafeteria, we couldn't barely hear a thing. With that said, I would have like to see a bit better or larger baskets next year. Keep up the good work all of you who volunteer your time (most of you mother's I am sure) for the good of the school!

According to all the latest blogs - I believe the laws have changed. Perhaps TrickyTray.com, for the State of New Jersey, better contact the State and find out if the laws have changed since they do so every couple of months. Mount Olive might be in the right!
Anonymous said…
To add to the Temple Beth AM TT comments, I won a basket of junk also. It had a gift bag in it, some olditems that have been around forever and packing tape that was stuck to everything. When I got to the bottem and took the paper out, I saw all these clumps of fur, dust and lint. Under that were stains from whatever was in the basket before I got it. It was dirty. This group needs to work on new, unused items. TT's are not garage sales for unwanted items. I must admit, the food at the Manor was superb as always. Maybe I should send the basket back to the group so they can continue to use as a trash can. Very disappointed.

You can easily go to the state of NJ web site for the rules. They are:
13:47-6.20 Prohibited prizes
(a) No licensee shall offer or award any prize consisting of real estate or any interest therein, onds, shares of stock, securities or evidences of indebtedness, weapons, live animals (except a gift certificate redeemable for live, edible seafood) alcoholic beverages, foreign or domestic coins (except collector pieces
or sets that are marketed as such and are clearly not intended for use as legal tender) tobacco products, motor vehicle leases, or any merchandise refundable in any of the foregoing or as money or cash.
(b) A prize consisting of cash or money shall not be offered or awarded except in the case of:
1. A raffle conducted by drawing with the prize(s) equaling 50 percent of the amount received for all tickets or fights to participate;
2. A calendar raffle with the maximum prize amount not to exceed $25,000, held, operated, and
conducted pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:47-8;
3. An instant raffle game having a maximum prize amount of $500.00 for any one ticket, held,operated, and conducted pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:47-8;
4. Any bingo game(s) held, operated and conducted in accordance with the provisions of this chapter and the Bingo Licensing Law, N.J.S.A. 5:8-24 etseq.; or
5. Big six wheels and horse race wheels conducted in accordance with the provisions set forth in
N.J.A.C. 13:47-8.

Clearly, no alcoholic beverages or cash or anything redeemable as such (Visa card, lottery tickets, gift certificate for wine etc.) You could still have a money tree but you would have to sell separate numbered tickets so that it was a 50/50. For example 200 tickets at $2.00 for a $200 money tree. Alternately you could run a calendar raffle with the largest cash prize coinciding with your Tricky Tray date.

To answer the anonymous above:

New Jersey Register Volume 38, Issue 16 - Issue Date, AUGUST 21, 2006 RULE ADAPTIONS LAW AND PUBLIC SAFETY DIVISION OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS LEGALIZED GAMES OF CHANCE CONTROL COMMISSION

37 N.J.R. 3309(b)

Adpoted AMENDMENDMENTSL N.J.A.C. 13:47-1.1, 2.3, 6.20 and 8.7

13:47-6.20 Prohibited Prizes

(a) No licensee shall offer or award any prize consisting of real estate or any interest therein, bonds, shares of stock, securities or evidence of indebtedness, weapons, live animals (except a gift certificate redeemable for live, edible seafood), foreign or domestic coins (except collector pieces or sets that are marketed as such and are clearly not intended for use as legal tender), tobacco products, motor vehicle leases, or any merchandise refundable in any of the goregoing or as money or cash."

So - perhaps someone should do proper investigation and quote the AMENDED laws instead of the old ones. NOWHERE in the above is listed alcohol as it is now allowed only that a disclaimer needs to be posted that the winner must be at least 21 years of age.

I hope I have done enough research for the future Tricky Trays going on out there. By the way, this law does expire on July 12, 2007 so feel free to put in a bottle of wine (with a disclaimer) at your Tricky Tray until July 12, 2007!
Anonymous said…
P.S. to the above - I should have added the rest of the law which is as stated below:

13:47-8.7 "Contents of ticket: off-premises raffel awarding merchandise as a prize; additional requirement for alcoholic beverage as a prize
(a)-(d) (No change.)

(e) "In addition to the requirement of (a) through (d) above, a ticket for which one of hte prizes is an alcoholic beverage shall bear the statement "Winner must be at least 21 years of age.:

THANK YOU!

The Last post is correct as of right now. You can find right here.

To the blogger that asked that TrickyTray.com investigate, I do list the info to contact NJ Gaming Commission. As far as posting legal info on the site..no way. I am not a lawyer..and do not want future legal hassles..plus though the tricky tray is much more of NJ trend..I post for all states.

To all trick tray organizers, I suggest you always contact local & state goverment for coorect rules & regulations.

OK, so I stand corrected that I did not post the AMENDED regulation. I almost forgot that I was dealing with the State of New Jersey who expects one to peruse 7 years of amendments to infer the correct information. I was just trying to help, could you all lose the 'tude!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anonymous said…
I just want to thank you Mr. Tricky Tray, for posting the correct information. I am sure that people do not know the TRUE laws and cast blame before evidence. I am so sorry that this has leaked to your web site. I can't imagine that a school would actually do the "wrong thing" before researching.
I hope this brings some closure to the subject. The BEST advice is the one you gave, call the State BEFORE your event to make sure you are following the proper rules.

Again, Sincere Thank You and Good Luck with your web site!

To the Anonymous of 5:38pm. I am sorry you think there is a "tude", you should have researched the real laws prior to quoting them, this can hurt people you know?

To anonymouts above - St. Luke's in Long Valley is having a Tricky Tray soon, I don't know when, you should call them! Good Luck at it if you go!

In regard to Mr. Tricky Tray's offer to list the Tricky Trays by county, would it be possible instead to put in zip code and pull up tricky trays within a 5 or 10 mile radius? I am sure there is some open source code that would let you do this on your site. While many of the listings look great the reality is we are only willing to travel a certain distance from home. Thanks - great site.

To Mr. Tricky Tray:

Here's a thought I'd appreciate your considering. Many Tricky Trays occur annually and generally around the same time of the year.
It would be great if we could access a master list (so to speak) of every Tricky Tray that was posted on this site in the last rolling twelve month period, the location of the organization and the date the event was held. That would make it much easier for us to do our research in determining if we want to attend the coming year's event. It would also be a lot easier to locate last year's attendees' reactions and comments in the closed blogs. Any chance of that happening?

PS I love your site. It's been such a great venue for letting us diehards know where we can go on any given nite to have some fun! Keep up the good work!

I wanted to thank people who came out to last night's tricky tray & helped us make it a success!

It was not only the first our theater ever tried, it's the first *I* ever organized, and I was happy to see so many people look like they were having a good time.

We attended the St. John Neumann tricky tray last night. It was ok. The first level prizes were fairly low in value for the ticket price - $5 a sheet. The prize I won was less than $15. For $5 a sheet I want to see prizes worth at least $30. The other prices were high, too. At $3 a ticket I am used to seeing TVs, Wii, etc., not a basket of games worth maybe $100. It seemed well organized, there were a good number of prizes for the number of attendees, and they had a good selection of food (also pricey). However, I probably won't return to this one.

Response to Larissa:

I attended the Bergen Players TT, and you did a great job. Staff were very nice; gifts were fine...if only those 3 tables would have stopped winning everything!!!! Just teasing... sometimes Lady Luck just gets a seat at your table! Congratulations to all of you. I hope everyone appreciated how much work you all put into the night. Much good luck with the company's next season!

Attended St. John Neumann's also. I just wish organizers would read this blog in advance for advice. I went crazy watching them feebly shake the tickets in a 8x4 inch open topped metal container. A child at my table won a prize and the runner took her whole ticket stub and threw it away. Luckily, an adult noticed and pulled the ticket, now covered with gum, from the garbage can. The tickets were sooo expensive. $5 a sheet. 5 sheets were $21 and 10 sheets were $41. That's only a one dollar savings between the two. There were no savings on the specials. Some of the regular table prizes were worth only 5.99 or so. The number of attendees was so reasonable, they could have bundled together gifts and still had enough baskets to make everyone happy. Food was also very expensive. They were a very pleasant and helpful group. They just need to remember my new mantra, "Read The Blog, Read The Blog, Read The Blog...."

Thanks for the input on the BCP TT. They're already talking about next year (I created a monster, I think), but if we do it again, now we can learn from our mistakes... like REALLY splitting up the work so that some of us will only put gathering donations & won't also be responsible for selling tickets, marketing, making express packs, making baskets, etc. I was up 'til all hours for months because of this. And that way, we can get bigger & better prizes because we can be more focused.

Again, thank you, and I hope you won some stuff!

Hi,

Just a little note from me. I am running the Ramapough Nation Tricky Tray. We have alot of nice prizes and are very cheap with our sheet prices. Also we only allow 300 people tops so that everyone has a good chance of winning. Right now I have sold about 150 tickets and would like to sell atleast 75 more before the Tricky Tray. If you have any questions you can email me or call me. This is a really good one if you want a chance to win . We have Oakley sun glasses,Patio set, gold bag, hair stuff, scratch offs and lots more.

Thanks,

My eyes got wider at "gold bag" too! LOL! Depending on my schedule, I may be going to that one.

Y'know, I was reading back through some older posts & the freakiness of some people over not allowing bent tickets (i.e. people having fits that you don't let them cheat). In our program, I specifically put in BIG letters, highlighted - NO BENT TICKETS... and still there were tickets that were bent completely in half!! I refused to pull them, of course, but what did these people think? I'd say it & not follow through? Give me a break. If anything, when you don't listen to me & follow the rules it pisses me off & makes me LESS sorry when you don't win!

I'm contrary that way.
